About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
In this unexpected memoir, written in a creative burst of just a few months in 2022, Sam Neill tells the story of how he became one of the world's most celebrated actors, who has worked with everyone from Meryl Streep to Isabel Adjani, from Jeff Goldblum to Sean Connery, from Steven Spielberg to Jane Campion.
By his own account, his career has been a series of unpredictable turns of fortune. Born in 1947 in Northern Ireland, he emigrated to New Zealand at the age of seven. His family settled in Dunedin on the South Island, but young Sam was sent away to boarding school in Christchurch, where he was hopeless at sports and discovered he enjoyed acting.
But how did you become an actor in New Zealand in the 1960 and 1970s where there was no film industry? After university he made documentary films while also appearing in occasional amateur productions of Shakespeare. In 1977 he took the lead in Sleeping Dogs, the first feature made in New Zealand in more than a decade, a project that led to a major role in Gillian Armstrong's celebrated My Brilliant Career.
And after that Sam Neill found his way, sometimes by accident, into his own brilliant career. He has worked around the world, an actor who has moved effortlessly from blockbuster to art house to TV, from Dr Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park movies to The Piano and Peaky Blinders.
Did I Ever Tell You This? is a joy to listen to, a marvellous and often very funny book, the work of a natural storyteller who is a superb observer of other people, and who writes with love and warmth about his family. It is also his account of his life outside film, especially in Central Otago where he established Two Paddocks, his vineyard famous for its pinot noir.

Beautifully written
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. Sam started off with quite a laboured narration, but it picked up eventually and I was hooked by his wonderful voice and storytelling. Lots of interesting stories about his upbringing, told with humour and brilliant description, and many interesting and surprising tales of his professional life. He is kind about everyone and there is little about his marriages - ever the gentleman. May he survive his latest brush with cancer and continue to entertain us for many years to come.

I think I’m going to miss Sam now this book is finished!
An absolutely beautiful book, I felt like I was listening to the stories from a beloved family member by the end. Written and read in a warm and friendly tone, Sam shared stories from his life and in doing so, tells us how he became himself. He is very humble and down to earth, he mentions his feelings on beliefs people can hold strongly (religious and political) without any sharpness or judgement. There was meaning and depth in this narrative without it being far too person; it was respectful. He has a lovely sense of humour too. I loved listening to this book, I think I’ll miss Sam now! I’d very much recommend the audiobook.

Enjoy this
I couldn’t believe that I finished as quickly as I did. I was ready for more. And I think he could write more. But I enjoyed it very much. He narrates it very well and I suppose unlike some biographies he didn’t drone on with boring stuff. He kept it short & sweet & to the point. I particularly enjoyed his childhood years in Ireland.

Calming
I chose this book to stay calm... not to learn something, not to entertain myself... just enjoy being. It worked. I loved the tone of voice, I slept deeply during some chapters, I laughed about some stories... I stayed calm and enjoyed listening it.
