Summary

I wanted this baby so badly.

But she may be the death of me...

Anna Alcott is desperate to have a family. But as she tries to balance her increasingly public life as an indie actress with a gruelling IVF regime, she starts to suspect that someone is going to great lengths to make sure that never happens. Crucial medicines are lost and appointments get moved without her knowledge. And when she finally does get pregnant, someone breaks into her house and steals the ultrasound photograph of her baby. But despite everything she's gone through, not even her husband is willing to believe that someone is playing twisted games with her.

Then her doctor tells her she's lost the baby. Despite her grief, Anna ignores the grave-faced men lecturing her about her own body - because she can still feel the baby moving. Miraculously the pregnancy continues, but it takes a terrible toll on Anna's body. As her symptoms become more horrifying, she can't help but wonder what exactly is growing inside her...and why no-one will listen when she says that something is terribly wrong.

The Push meets The Silent Patient in this gripping thriller of obsession, loss, and the lengths we go to protect our children...

Feminism and Pregnancy loss.

I've always struggled with the media's depiction of pregnancy too. I've lost two babies late term and I just remember feeling like I'd never seen or heard of anything like what id been through and how lonely and isolated it felt. It actually made me appreciate horror films and TV shows much more because at least it depicted the truth of what could happen anyway this book definitely feels like an ode to women like me and I appreciate it. Thank you for the fantastic read.

I didn’t want this book to end

I fell in love with this book, especially knowing that it is tied with American Horror Story season 12, as I’m a massive AHS fan.

The protagonist, Anna, was so relatable and empathised with her so much when she was told not to worry.

Overall the story, setting and tone were exquisite and made me really relish this experience.

A must read!

Absolutely stunning and SO creepy

Loved this. Real sense of tension from beginning to end. Great social commentary on childbirth.

Trigger warning for anyone who has experienced grief from child loss or infertility. These are major themes and told in a very realistic way.

She closes her eyes..... over and over and OVER!

Not taking anything away from the serious storyline of miscarriage, this book is an absolute whingefest. I didn't gel with the main character at all. I downloaded it in the interim before part 2 of American Horror Story 12, Delicate is released as I had theories my patience wouldn't wait for. Firstly, the narrator needs to blow her nose. Secondly, I'm not exaggerating when I say I lost count of how many times she 'closed her eyes'. It was repeated so frequently that I ended up with Jason Donovan singing 'Any Dream Will Do' as an earworm for the duration. I'll be interested to see how much of the storyline is used for the remainder of AHS 12, but other than that, this book was not for me. The author's note rubbed me up the wrong way, too. While she raises valid points about women being ignored by doctors, and that black women are more likely to die during childbirth, etc, she - in my opinion - undoes any 'female solidarity' by referring to us as "cis-women" and "people who are pregnant". Honestly, if it wasn't for the show and my curiosity, I would have jacked this book in about halfway, which is not something I often do.
