About this listen
Anakin Skywalker–the Chosen One—is dead. In his place rises Darth Vader, who now hunts what Jedi survived the destruction of their temple on Coruscant.
From the site of Anakin Skywalker’s last stand—on the molten surface of the planet Mustafar, where he sought to destroy his friend and former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi—a fearsome specter in black has risen. Once the most powerful Knight ever known to the Jedi Order, he is now a disciple of the dark side, a lord of the dreaded Sith, and the avenging right hand of the galaxy’s ruthless new Emperor. Seduced, deranged, and destroyed by the machinations of the Dark Lord Sidious, Anakin Skywalker is dead . . . and Darth Vader lives.
Word of the events that created him—the Jedi Council’s failed mutiny against Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, the self-crowned Emperor’s retaliatory command to exterminate the Jedi Order, and Anakin’s massacre of his comrades and Masters in the Jedi Temple–has yet to reach all quarters. On the Outer Rim world of Murkhana, Jedi Masters Roan Shryne and Bol Chatak and Padawan Olee Starstone are leading a charge on a Separatist stronghold, unaware that the tide, red with Jedi blood, has turned suddenly against them.
When the three narrowly elude execution—and become the desperate prey in a hunt across space—it’s neither clone soldiers, nor the newly deployed stormtroopers, nor even the wrath of the power-hungry Emperor himself they must fear most. The deadliest threat rests in the hideously swift and lethal crimson lightsaber of Darth Vader–behind whose brooding mask lies a shattered heart, a poisoned soul, and a cunning, twisted mind hell-bent on vengeance.
For the handful of scattered Jedi, survival is imperative if the light side of the Force is to be protected and the galaxy somehow, someday reclaimed. Yet more important still is the well-being of the twin infants, Leia and Luke Skywalker, the children of Anakin and his doomed bride, Padmé Amidala. Separated after Padmé’s death, they must be made safe at all costs, lest the hope they represent for the future be turned to horror by the new Sith regime—and the unspeakable power of the dark side.

Adjust your speakers.
I like Mark Thompson, excellent in the Thrawn books. But the volume of his voice in this made me stop listening. I was constantly turning the volume up and down. He’d almost whisper the Narrative before then shouting the Dialogue. Particularly difficult when a clone trooper was talking, because of the helmet type voice it was sooo loud so I’d have to turn it down, but then he’d whisper off some narrative, so I’d have to turn it up again. Couldn’t get past chapter 2… think I’ll have to buy a hard copy of this title 👍🏻
I’ve listen to several audiobooks in my car, daily as I listen to and from work. So it’s difficult to point any blame to my speakers…

Fantastic...
...though obviously A legend status novel. Due to Disney licencing etc, I still really enjoyed this story covering the weeks after mustafar and Lord Vader's acceptance of his new role. Well worth a credit.

Meh.
It is okay but not what I expected. The scenes with Vader are really good, but when we follow the others, it is not the best or the most interesting, especially the first part. I recognize that it is to build up the Jedi of the story, but I am more interested in Vader than in them.
Then, there is the audio mixing. The narrator is my favorite; I love his works, but the audio team botched the mixing. The effects are many times louder than him, making it hard to hear the book.
Buy it only if you can get it for cheap.

Terrible audiobook for a great book
I was excited for this novel and its unabridged version as Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader is one of my favourite books from the Star Wars Expanded Universe. I was horribly disappointed by each and every audiobook I've listened to.
The sound editing and sound mixing in this one was awful. I could hardly hear what Thompson was saying in the early chapters of the book during Part 1. From Part 2 onwards,
Marc Thompson's general voice over direction and approach made this audiobook as well as the audiobooks for The Force Unleashed, I,Jedi and Wraith Squadron made all of them unbearable for me to listen to and enjoy. Slowly reading the narrative story so I am unable to relax and enjoy. Over the top performance for the characters makes them come off as whiny, high-pitched voices that made my ears bleed. It's impossible to take the characters or the story seriously at any point and its hard to simply just listen to and enjoy the book as I would like to do.
The voices for the characters are mostly spot-on impressions, except for Marc Thompson's voice for Darth Vader. The voice sounds more like a bad impression of Orson Welles' Unicron rather than an accurate James Earl Jones Darth Vader. Especially in Chapter 19, when we are listening to Vader unmasked as Anakin Skywalker, Thompson's approach for the voice is just horrible to listen to given how he keeps exagerating with Vader's weird breathing noise. It made me feel as if something was just stabbing my ear drums.
I never thought I'd say this but I have become tired of Marc Thompson being the only narrator for Star Wars Expanded Universe books and I would like to hear another talented voice actor with passion for Star Wars and storytelling take over instead.
I recommended to a friend of mine to listen to the abridged audiobook that already exists voiced by Jonathan Davis. And I myself never though I would say this either. Because even though the other one is already abridged and unfortunately cuts out 40% of the book for no reason, I would rather listen to Jonathan Davis' audiobook and honestly he gave a better Vader voice.
I really did not want to make this review but these are my honest feelings. I feel like we all deserve better audiobooks for the Star Wars books we grew up loving and want exposed to mainstream public.
