Summary
A young woman's body is discovered on a deserted footpath.
It seems like a simple crime for DCI Sophie Allen and her team to solve. But not when the victim's mother is found strangled the next morning. The case grows more complex as DCI Sophie Allen discovers that the victims had secret histories involving violence and intimidation. There's an obvious suspect, but Detective Allen isn't convinced. Could someone else be lurking in the shadows, someone savagely violent, looking for warped revenge?
Dark Crimes is the first in a series of detective thrillers featuring DCI Sophie Allen, head of the newly formed Violent Crime Unit in Dorset. She is pushed to the limit in her first major case as the team's head.

Not much.
It was an ok story but please sack the narrator she was terrible. It spoiled a reasonable story.

Shame
Good plot spoilt by too many mispronunciations by narrator and at times her bored tone.

The narrator
The narrator spoiled the story for me. I was sometimes laughing so much at the awful accents that it took the emphasis away from the story.

Enjoyable
Worth a listen. Narration OK - a little robotic and almost everyone sounded the same, which got a little grating as got further through. I found the ending a little lacking but still enjoyed. Worth listening to being free at the moment.

Awful narrator
I really did try, but as previously said the narration is quite bizarre, totally distracts you from what probably was a decent story, couldn’t finish

Clunky language and terrible narration
The story itself was interesting although became more absurd as it went on. The police procedure and chief inspector but a bit unbelievable in places. The narration was awful, wrong emphasis, mispronunciations, unreal accents and every word spoken separately, almost dalek like in places. Not reading it I don‘t know if it was written completely without contractions, even in speech, but nothing flowed. I wanted to hear the end of the story and found marginally better on 1.3 speed, something I‘ve never done before.

Horrendous accents
Storyline held my attention despite the narrators weird and inconsistent accents. Some innacuracies regarding police procedures.
The coincidental meeting was a disappointing means of arrest.

That Australian accent could not be disguised and really took away the authenticity of the tale. Walzal????? Walsall surely!

Narrator truly is awful and ruins a good story
I didn’t think all the awful reviews about the narrator could be that bad. But she IS that bad. She kills this book stone dead!
The character of Sophie Allen is vibrant and energetic - quick to praise, enthusiastic when people get it right, scathing when they do not or someone is trying to put her down. The narrator would have done Dylan the spaced-out rabbit in “The Magic Roundabout” really well. She makes Sophie sound as if she is coming down off a cannabis trip - dragging voice with an Australian intonation. In fact, although I have only listened to the first chapter, she makes everyone sound the same, a bit like an engine trying to rev up and failing.
A real shame because the Sophie Allen books are excellent. But I simply cannot listen to this narrator any more. This is going back.
