About this listen

‘THE BOOK EVERY VOTER MUST READ’ Mail on Sunday

‘Meticulous and highly readable … Funny and devastating’ Daily Telegraph

‘The most compelling in-depth study so far’ Guardian

A gripping expose of the man, his politics and what Corbyn in Downing Street could mean for Britain

After four unremarkable decades in politics, Jeremy Corbyn stands on the brink of power. Until his surprise election as leader of the Labour Party in 2015, this seemingly unelectable oddball had not been a major political player. Since then, Corbyn has survived coup attempts and accusations of incompetence that would have felled most politicians, including grave charges of anti-Semitism, bullying and not being the master of his brief. Despite these shortcomings, as the Conservatives rip themselves apart over Europe, he is likely soon to become Britain's prime minister.

Yet this hero of the far left has done his best to conceal much of his past and personal life from public scrutiny. In this book, best-selling investigative biographer Tom Bower reveals hidden truths about Corbyn's character, the causes and organisations he espouses, and Britain's likely fate under the Marxist-Trotskyist society he has championed since the early 1970s.

Based on eyewitness accounts from those who have known Corbyn throughout his life, the book asks whether a Labour government led by Corbyn would transform the country for the better. Has capitalism, as he argues, run its course, and would our lives be improved by socialism? If so, what is Corbyn's brand of socialism? The same as that experienced under successive Labour governments since 1945, or something more extreme? Will his advocacy of more debt, tax hikes and renationalisation reproduce the fate of Venezuela as championed by his own hero Hugo Chávez? Is he a reformer or a revolutionary? Will he deliver a glowing new era or catastrophe?

His supporters damn every opponent and critic, calling them 'traitors' or worse. Does this aggression, and the accusations that paint Corbyn as an entrenched anti-Semite and misogynist, override his image as an authentic 'good bloke'?

Many are excited by the prospect of Corbyn’s arrival in Downing Street. Others believe that Corbyn as prime minister will prove to be a dangerous hero.

Critic reviews

’The book every voter must read’ Mail on Sunday

‘Funny and devastating, it stands as an indictment of both the Labour Party and a political system that allows an individual such as Jeremy Corbyn to come within shouting distance of the levers of power in this country.’ Daily Telegraph

‘The most compelling in-depth study so far of a man whose head is unusually difficult to get inside.’ The Guardian

‘An unexpectedly funny account of the Labour leader’s life … the author reveals a side of Corby’s personality that is not at all well known or even acknowledged in today’s Labour Party: his love of the limelight. The book describes, in hilarious detail, Corbyn’s determination to be part of the story of the election of Britain’s first three black MPs … Entertaining and impressive research … Bower’s meticulous and highly readable account must be absorbed from start to finish. Funny and devastating, it stands as an indictment of both the Labour Party and a political system that allows an individual such as Jeremy Corbyn to come within shouting distance of the levers of power.’ Daily Telegraph

‘One of the most depressing books I’ve ever read. It is a forensically detailed portrait of a man with no inner life, a monomaniac suffused with an overwhelming sense of his own righteousness … Probably the most shocking fact in this biography is that so many of his former intimates believe he has never read a book … Nobody who reads this book can be in any doubt that if he became prime minister, he would comfortably be the most indolent, least articulate and least intelligent holder of the office in historyDominic Sandbrook, The Times

An anatomy of a liar

"Stupid people". An interesting perspective on a devious and deceitful politician, a likely anti-semite and possibly the worst Labour party leader there has ever been.

What a terrifying, compelling eye opener.

Like so many people I was unsure about Jeremy Corbyn in 2016 and had a curious fascination with the person who had transformed the left of British politics.

Like many people the more I got to see him the less sure I was about his past and what he would mean as prime minister. I wondered if I was being unfair. After reading this I can see that I was not.

the author approaches this subject clearly from the centre left, but not of the Corbyn faction. this makes the dissection and exposure of Corbyn's past so much more devastating. His life has been diligently chronicled and explained as to how it has shaped the politics of the man, and how he was spring to public consciousness in 2016, so far from his days as an early firebrand MP.

I was concerned that this would be an out and out hatchet job, but it is far too empirical and objective for that. For any British voter who flirted with voting for Corbyn in either 17 or 19 should definitely read this. your political judgement may be rocked for some time.

The only regret about the book is that it was written prior to the 2019 election. this would have made a fascinating chapter as the British public overwhelmingly rejected Corbyn and his brand.

Finally, if you are a Corbynista, this book is probably not for you. Anyone else, it most certainly is.

essential reading if interested in politics

Most people appreciate Corbyn's flaws but this book crystallizes quite what a threat he is to the UK. Whilst he remains leader of labour they will remain unelectable. A terrible reality if you believe in a centre left view of the world.

A brilliant account of the Labour leader

JC could have been PM especially against Theresa May - Britain dodged a frightening future by rejecting Corbyn.

Read This and Remember.

I think everyone of voting age in the UK should listen to this book and all I can say is God help this country if Corbyn ever got elected as PM. He’s an absolute disgrace of a man so just be careful what you wish for.

The most frightning book that I have ever read

Listening to this book it almost beggers belief that people are taken in and support this man whose stated aim is to destroy our country and to turn it into a Marxist, totalitarian state. Every one of the awful revalations that I thought couldn't be true, turned out to be absolutely true when I researched them. Read/listen to this book, look up each fact that his supporters would have you belief are fabrications of the right wing press and you will find that they are true. God help our country if Corbyn and his Marxist, Communist cronies ever get into power

A Warning For All

A very interesting read which shows that Corbyn does not care about the poor the country or its people. He is interested in an ideology that should have died out in the 20th century. Racist, sexist and unapologetic Corbyn is hungry for power.
Excellent read and very well narrated
