Summary

When the gods vanished, daemons took over protecting humans from the things that go bump in the night...until daemons decide they deserve more.

Orphaned young and raised by the military, Octavia only knows the world of duty and honor. When she discovers they're sacrificing people to create the ultimate super soldier, men engineered specifically to rid the world of what they consider the supernatural plague, she rebels and vows to do everything in her power to stop them.

The last thing Octavia expects to find is daemons willing to help her survive. Or that she may be one of them. To make things worse, an ancient power has awakened inside her.

Sworn to protect her, the daemons decide to teach her how to use her new abilities. They never expected to fall in love with their infuriatingly vexing charge, who maddeningly risks everything to get justice for past wrongs. If they can't find a way to remove the magic before the demigods discover the truth, Octavia will die when they rip it out of her, and the world will crumble into chaos.

Great start

Great start to a series. Story was refreshing and good characters. Only one small niggle was one of the male characters voices was very effeminate. Appreciate it's difficult to inject 4 different voices for the main males with the narrator being female so didn't impact my stars rating. On to book 2.

What an amazing start to a series

I am a huge Stacey Brutger fan and couldn't wait to listen to this book. I initially loved Octavia, but as the book unfolded i felt like she became a bit of a push over. I must admit i did rage out loud at parts wanting her to stand up for herself. But.... the world building is amazing and im really hoping Octavia finally stands her ground.
The ending was the great and now i need to know more.
Really want book 2 to see how this series unfolds 💕

Enjoyable but Mixed Feelings

First things first, the story is pretty great. Octavia and her guys are honestly interesting and rhe fight scenes are intense. Some pros and cons with possible SPOILERS need to be addressed though..

Pros
I love a good fated mates moment
Octavia is a badass FMC
They left a possibility for a sequel
Hot protective alphas
Some good laugh out loud moments
Interesting Storyline

Cons
NO SEX, None at all (strange for a RH) A few kisses
The daemon "magic" system is hard to follow
The narrator was AWFUL with the male voices
Hours later I still have no idea what the FMC is
God's, Daemons, demi gods, enhanced humans... its honestly to confusing to keep up with

Great story.

Loved this story. Can't wait to read more. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the entire story. All the stories I've read by this author has had me coming back for more and I will be on the lookout for more precious books from her. If you love RH stories with sexy men and that one man you want to hate but can't find a way to, then this story is for you. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Written by a 5 year old

I kept listening until the end as the story had some interesting ideas. However, the writing style is so bad, I kept rolling my eyes every 2 minutes. So it’s difficult to know if the narrator is good or not. It didn’t feel it was improving the book. So globally, it could have been a good story if it was rewritten.

Couldn't stick with the book

I just couldn't get on board with some of the voices used for the men. It threw the story off for me and ultimately I gave up on the book and fast forwarded to nearly the end.
