Summary

It is called Crota...and it has awakened. Sheriff Skip Harding is called out to investigate a double homicide unlike any he has seen before. The bodies have been torn to pieces in the woods. Some think it's a bear. But others whisper something different. "It is the Crota," they say, - the great beast of Native American legend that one day will reawaken. Now that day has arrived.

Gripping thriller

From the first few minutes I was hooked and I listened through to the very end (until 3.20am!). Great audio book, definitely worth getting.

Amazing story!

What did you love best about Crota?

The whole story keeps you in suspence. Mr. Goingback's imagination is incredible...

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, with all the mystery and killing. It was unpredictable.

Have you listened to any of Heath Kizzier’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I loved his voice very clear, pleasant and sexy too.

If you could rename Crota, what would you call it?

I wouldn't dare.

Any additional comments?

I wish that Mr. Goingback would write more books like this one. I have all of his books. I enjoyed each and one of them.

Try this you want something dark and different

I really enjoyed this one and was scared at several points ... enough that the soles of my feet broke out in a sweat. For me, this was a new and original retelling of the age old struggles of good against evil. Owl Goingback is a capable storyteller. Clearly he deserved winning the Bram Stoker Award for this one. It is not a perfect story but the best ones rarely are. Gotta go ... time to purchase the others books by Owl Goingback and maybe a really nice hardcover edition of this one.

Really good!

This is a good scary monster book. It is fast paced and is really enjoyable. The cops getting handled had me a little tense at one point. This is a good book for anyone that enjoys man vs monster stories. Its well written and the narrator did a good job as well. Would recommend.

Good!

I've been a horror fan for 25 years (my mom took me to see my first horror movie, jaws, at age 6). This is the first book, in a long time, that had me scared in the first chapter. Thank you! Owl Goingback, for a fabulous listen!

Dean Koontz meets Tony Hillerman

The literary elite might find faults with this work but I found it to be a very good story. It is an intersting combination of Native American lore and modern day mystery. If you enjoy either Koontz or Hillerman you will enjoy this one. I look forward to more of this authors work.

crota - it's okay

I am not going to say that this is a hidden gem or anyting - far from it.
When I read this one other review here, I must admit that one pushed me over the edge. You know, the girl that says she's been into the horror-genre for 25 years and this one finally scared here.
As expected, nothing here scared me, but I don't know about you: do you ever really get scared, literally?
Having said that, considering the many terrible reviews the book got at amazon (among some good ones), this was decent. Nothing special. But not bad, either. If I was to truly recommend someting, though, I'd say "the killer's wife", which I finished today.

A blast from the past

Very little fiction mingled with Native American history is out there. Those that are have fantastic writing and give us a glimpse into a past that for the most part is forgotten or is a secret. Owl Goingback is a fantastic writer and Heath Kizzier does his story Justice.

I need all his books now!

✨4.5 stars✨

I listened to this book on audible for my first Read Your Own Adventure Challenge pick. I am on Team Necromancer and so we have horror books to read. The first prompt is The Untrodden Forest- Read a book by an indigenous author or have indigenous rep. This book had both.

The Crota is a beast of nightmares that was awoken after an earthquake. Not haven eaten for 1000 years it took to the surface to feed. I held my breath as it tore through animals and cows, leaving a bloody trail back to its lair.
The Sheriff and Game Warden team up to battle the beast underground. Will they succeed?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the narrator did an amazing job too. For a long time I have been searching for a scary creature story and by golly this one was just great. Full of danger, suspense and plenty of gore, I could not top listening.

Great Book! I don't know why this book has received some negative reviews, it is amazing. I'm going to find a physical copy when I can.
