About this listen

NYPD Detective Alec MacAidan has always been good with weird. After all, his life has been a string of the unexplainable. But when an injured man gives him cryptic clues, then turns to dust in front of him, Alec's view on weird is changed forever.

Cronin, a vampire Elder, has spent the last 1,000 years waiting for Alec. He'd been told his fated one would be a man wielding a shield, but he didn't expect him to be human, and he certainly didn't expect that shield to be a police badge.

Both men, strong-willed and stubborn, are still learning how to cope with the push and pull of being fated, when fate throws them another curveball.

Rumors have spread quickly of turmoil in Egypt. Covens are fleeing with news of a vampire who has a talent like no other, hell-bent on unleashing the wrath of Death.

Alec and Cronin are thrown into a world of weird Alec cannot imagine. What he learned in school of ancient pharaohs and Egyptian gods was far from the truth. Instead, he finds out firsthand that history isn't always what it seems.

I enjoyed this book and the dry humour of it.
Have listened to it twice

The narrator sounds like a tired and week chain smoker who’s dying and ruins the story. Who decided to employ an inappropriate voice ? They should be shown the back door

Good story but

As books this series is amazing. As an Audio, Joel Leslie adds so much more. His ability to give every character a distinct voice, the sights and sounds of the locations while vivid in the book become bright and minute in the audio. He is in the middle of book 11 now and it's going to be just as Glorious.
I highly recommend this to Everyone.

Good, yet simple story, straightforward. Narrator has great accent skills, I've listened to him do australian accent perfectly also. Hope in the second book there's more spicy alone scenes between the two characters.

Good read

An LGBT+ vampire story with a very positive outcome and characters you can root for.
Initially I wasn’t sure about the narrator at first, but after a chapter or two I was pulled into the story with his ability to clearly distinguish between the different characters making this a thoroughly engrossing experience.

A vampire story with an interesting twist.

I’m a crazy Egyptian god geek and this was so up my ally!

I’m so getting the second and third book in a couple days, I’m super curious about what Alec’ true purpose is! I have read the descriptions of the other books so I do know that Alec will be a vampire eventually, but I’m just like—ahh how long are they gonna continue his mortality??

Also I’ve never heard a supernatural story, where the Mc had to stay human for something to happened in the plot later on down the line, but hey I’m excited for book two & three!

10/10 love, love, love the banter as well!!

Ahhh how interesting!

Any additional comments?

Very good story line, lore, good character dynamics and just enough male/male intimacy.
Great narration and accents.

I cant wait for book 2.

Nate.

I found this book because I love Joel Leslie’s beautiful voice and am working my way through his catalog. I’m shocked I’ve never seen this series on BookTok because BookTokers are missing out. This was an excellent story full of drama, interesting characters and I loved it.

Excellent story

A good gay vampire story if you can ignore the terrible Scottish accents. Whilst not Scottish myself I have lived here 21 years. God knows what part of Scotland they're supposed to be from. On a side note, the Japanese character sounds like Mr Miyagi. Get over that and have yourself a good gay fantasy romp.

Good story terrible accents

From some of the reviews on here I thought I was in for an Uber sexy plotty adventure. How disappointing to find that the two characters didn’t even kiss properly until chapter 12 and apart from some hand jobs and frottage it was hardly all sex and no plot a one reviewer seems to think. As the character’s sexual relationship is actually pretty important to the plot line I think it all scenes were relevant and could have actually been expanded on to make them even more so. Loved all the characters, I was even fond on the minor ones. The world building here is great, we’re getting history, lore and context which give a depth to the story that pulls you in and drives you forward.
Joel Leslie did a great job performing the roles and I love his Scottish accent. All the other international accents were also handled with sensitivity and care so convincingly that it didn’t jar. It was a pleasure listening to this performance.

Not what I was expecting
