It is the summer of 1940. Nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris arrives in New York with her suitcase and sewing machine, exiled by her despairing parents. Although her quicksilver talents with a needle and commitment to mastering the perfect hair roll have been deemed insufficient for her to pass into her sophomore year of Vassar, she soon finds gainful employment as the self-appointed seamstress at the Lily Playhouse, her unconventional Aunt Peg's charmingly disreputable Manhattan revue theatre.

In 1977, at the age of 17, Conway left his family's comfortable suburban home to move to the Appalachian Mountains. For more than two decades he has lived there, making fire with sticks, wearing skins from animals he has trapped, and trying to convince Americans to give up their materialistic lifestyles and return with him to nature.

Story
Haroon Moghul was thrust into the spotlight after 9/11, becoming an undergraduate leader at New York University's Islamic Center and forced into appearances everywhere: on TV, before interfaith audiences, in print. Moghul was becoming a prominent voice for American Muslims even as he struggled with his relationship to Islam. In high school he was barely a believer and entirely convinced he was going to hell. He sometimes drank. He didn't pray regularly. All he wanted was a girlfriend. But as he discovered, it wasn't so easy to leave religion behind.
Summary
At the end of her best-selling memoir Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert fell in love with Felipe - a Brazilian-born man of Australian citizenship who'd been living in Indonesia when they met. Resettling in America, the couple swore eternal fidelity to each other, but also swore to never, ever, under any circumstances get legally married. (Both survivors of difficult divorces. Enough said.)
But providence intervened one day in the form of the U.S. government, who - after unexpectedly detaining Felipe at an American border crossing - gave the couple a choice: they could either get married, or Felipe would never be allowed to enter the country again.
Having been effectively sentenced to wed, Gilbert tackled her fears of marriage by delving completely into this topic, trying with all her might to discover (through historical research, interviews and much personal reflection) what this stubbornly enduring old institution actually is. The result is Committed - a witty and intelligent contemplation of marriage that debunks myths, unthreads fears and suggests that sometimes even the most romantic of souls must trade in her amorous fantasies for the humbling responsibility of adulthood.
Gilbert's memoir - destined to become a cherished handbook for any thinking person hovering on the verge of marriage - is ultimately a clear-eyed celebration of love, with all the complexity and consequence that real love, in the real world, actually entails.

Catch up .... it's as good as the last one!
I like Elizabeth Gilbert because she talks about things that we only think! We only think about 'marriage' but not in the way we should. This memoir was always going to be difficult after the best seller 'Eat, Pray, Love' which is an amazing book, but this book is different, very different. This book tells us of the story of her romance a few years on and also more importantly about marriage and the things that we don't say or think that we should have before we do get ... or don't get married. Read it and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Congratulations Elizabeth you have done it again!

A personal construct & innovative exploration of the institution of marriage.
An extremely clever author. Articulate & also able to gather much research & come up with unique spins on life, the universe & everything; well on Western marriage & her place in its institution & the world. I'd like her to pen a book on retirement or older age when she gets there because you could never call her work "same old same old". So many psychologists Etc drone on in highly dictatorial, non personal, non thinking parrot fashion type information & insights ( that aren't their own, just that with which they have been indoctrinated.) Its totally the reverse with Liz Gilbert. She is intellectually clever, a free thinker & really synthesises well the material she has researched. She is not a copier. She is a creator. I know she & Filipe are divorced now. I wonder if that was a mutual agreement. Don't think I could live with her! 😆

For anyone intrigued by their adversity to marriage
What a book!
I couldn’t put it down and literally binged on it.
From the history and discovery of modern marriage to the understanding and impact that Christianity has had on relationships and “taboo” around the female body and sexuality this was a fascinating and eye opening read. This book went beyond simply a greater understanding of why some people may have commitment issues to giving great insights into why so many people have the problems they do in their relationships and around their body.
A must read for anyone wanting to set themselves free of the shackles of out of date thinking around their relationships with themselves and their partner of choice.

Exactly what I needed to read
I never really understood marriage. I didn't know what it was or how it would fit into my life, or even if I would have to change to fit myself into the shoe that would be marriage.
I feel very informed about this topic now and more confident to experience this new chapter of life. Before this book, I felt like I was going into marriage blind. Now my partner and I feel at ease with this institution that is marriage and what it will mean to us personally and what our union will mean to those around us as well as legal and financially what it will mean to be married.
Thank you Elizabeth Gilbert for talking about such a personal subject with such grace and honesty.

Great book for those thinking what’s the fuss about Marriage
I am a fan of Liz Gilbert from Big Magic and I enjoyed the anthropological aspects of this booked mixed with personal anecdotes from the author own experience. I now have a more open and somewhat positive view of the marriage institution because I’ve read and now listened to some of the wise and funny musings in this book.

Definitely Not A Follow Up ........
..... to Eat Pray Love! I bought this book thinking us readers would learn more of Elizabeth's love story with her Brazilian lover that was so beautifully unfolded for us at the end of Eat Pray Love, the big adventure the two of them were about to embark on where the book left off. However, this book starts a couple of years later in the life of the two lovers and ends abruptly with their quiet marriage. In between, for at least three quarters of the book is what only can be described as a travel guide of marriages from all around the world, how they do it in different countries, the meaning of marriage in different cultures, its not a personal account just like a reviewers study guide. I was left feeling very disappointed with this, its nothing like as described in reviews or adverts.

Profoundly Simple
Being on the precipice of marriage myself, I bought Committed hoping it would discuss marriage from a few different sociological perspectives, which it did, albeit lightly. What surprised me is that this book is primarily a story, a story about Elizabeth Gilbert's attempt at coming to terms with the whole idea of marriage after having been through an intensely painful one already.
And being a guy I was hesitant to read an emotional account of her experience, but having just finished the book, I'm pleased to say that I have grown by reading this book. Without really expecting it to, it has addressed some of my own concerns, doubts and questions about marriage. And now, going into marriage, I think that I will approach it with a better appreciation for what women have given up for marriage in the past, and hopefully I'll use this knowledge to help redefine marriage within the privacy of my own union, and in doing so, within my community.

This is not a sequel of Eat,Pray, Love
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Commited is a book for those people who have or have had at some point in their lives, a hard time coming to terms with the institution of marriage. It is probably not for those who do not or did not question marriage, or those who do not or did not feel uncomfortable with conforming to such traditional institution. Commited is a long personal reflection of the author with regard to the need of getting married independently of her will. It seems that process took her took many months. To me, it took years. So, I definitely recommend the book. But don't expect a sequel of Eat, Pray, Love. This is an exercise on introspection, with rather little travelling and fun.
Would you be willing to try another book from Elizabeth Gilbert? Why or why not?
After finishing the book, I immediately looked for some of her speeches and talks and particularly enjoyed her TED talk on the creative process. She is an incredibly articulate writer with the perfect mixture of ironic and serious prose.
What about Elizabeth Gilbert’s performance did you like?
I had never listened to a writer speaking his (her) own book. It is very interesting and she did it well. I wished, though, she sounded a little more ironic on the ironic parts and paused longer after them, so that I would have had time to finish laughing before she started the following paragraph.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It is a long book, impossible to listen in one sitting for someone who juggles between family and office.

The Author Let us all down with this one -A WASTE!
All pumped up after reading Eat Love Pray - I was so keen to be engaged again by the Author that I dove right into this book without hesitation, only to be completely disappointed that 90% is about the history of Matrimony which was a big fat BORING and 10% about Elizabeth and Filipe. I felt completely let down by the Author and it feels like her publisher told her to spit another book out as the loyal fans will just go ahead and buy it regardless - Well Yes I did and I advise everyone DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY ON THIS ONE.

Absolute reading pleasure
The author's delightful style of writing and sober, yet entertaining take on marriage is a must - especially for those skeptical of the concept of "holy matrimony". The reviews here which complain about the factual aspects seem unfounded, as the facts are seemlessly woven into top class prose about a beautiful story of love and commitment like only Gilbert can.

Before you get married, listen to this!
I have loved Elizabeth Gilbert since the first time I read "Eat, Pray, Love". I find her honesty very comforting, and the way she writes is entertaining and funny. She's a very smart woman and a very accomplished writer. With this book, she goes even further on the meaning of what a marriage is, the commitment that so many people are afraid of. Through investigation and interesting reflections, the reader can learn about the tradition of srriage in different culture, its origins and what it means today, for the author and many others. It's a must for people who are considering to get married!

I love that it is read by Elizabeth herself and that it has shed much needed light on past, present and future matrimony.
It is very different from Eat Love Pray and wonderful in its own way.

Great book.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would strongly recommend it to readers married or unmarried, pro or against marriage, regardless of sex, age or sexual orientation. It was reassuring to me as someone who is pro and actually happily married, yet it opened up the horizon from the point of view of those who might be against matrimony for various reasons. I felt it was an honest narrative, which sometimes even brought tears to my eyes. Moreover, in my opinion the style was flawless, and in addition, the vocabulary and the way the text was crafted offered wonderful practice to my not-mother-tongue-but-dearly-beloved English. As an extra bonus the reader herself narrated it. I enjoyed every word. I am ready to listen to it again.
What other book might you compare Committed to and why?
I would not like to compare it to another.
What does Elizabeth Gilbert bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Extra layers of her personality.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Several.
Any additional comments?
None.
