Summary

Why do we want to write, and what stops us?

How does the urge to express ourselves fight with the worry that no one will care or that we will get in trouble?

How do we identify and overcome everything that gets in our way so we can start making work?

Sunday Times best-selling author Cathy Rentzenbrink shows you how to tackle all this and more in Write It All Down, a guide to putting your life on the page. This is a kind, encouraging and stimulating book that explores the nature of memoir writing and offers helpful guidance on how to write your life on paper. Rentzenbrink will help you to discover the pleasure and solace to be found in writing; the profound satisfaction of wrestling a story onto a page and seeing the events of your life transformed through the experience of writing the self.

Perfect for both seasoned writers as well as writing amateurs and everyone in between, this helpful handbook will steer you through the philosophical and practical challenges of writing the self. Intertwined with reflections, anecdotes and exercises, Write It All Down is at once an intimate and enjoyable narrative and an invitation to share your story.

Critic reviews

"Cathy is the person who first told me to write about my mental health when I was nervous to do so. She is a great writer herself and this is brilliant." (Matt Haig, best-selling author of Reasons to Stay Alive and The Midnight Library)

"A gentle, wise and witty book that will take you by the hand and guide your words onto the page - I truly wish I'd read it before I began to write." (Raynor Winn, Sunday Times best-selling author of The Salt Path and The Wild Silence)

Excellent guide to writing.

I have had over 50 factual features published and now, due to failing health, come to writing fiction. This book is inspiring, informative and interesting. Spurred me on to write. Thank you.

A wonderful guide to getting all manner of stuff done

Listening to this (audio book) has and is helping me with more than just memoir writing. Also a fictional novel I have on the go and numerous musical projects that I have had sitting around not progressing because of so many of the stumbling blocks Cathy mentions. This goes way beyond the remit of the book. I will be buying a printed copy of it as well as a constant reference point. Thank you so much Cathy for sharing your wisdom, humour and, quite frankly, personality.

Beautiful and inspiring. Thank you, Cathy!

Cathy Rentzenbrink's beautiful reading of her book felt like a desperately needed warm, comforting and reassuring hug from a friend. I have no publishing ambitions, but I do love journaling and thought this book might help me go deeper and better understand myself, my past and my issues. I wasn't disappointed. I loved every single word and felt very inspired and comforted. The book feels more like a manual on life than "just" a book on writing, overflowing with wisdom, truth, and kindness.
Thank you, Cathy!

Thank you Cathy

Thank you so much for putting this inciteful book together. With clear explanations of every pitfall possible, I am now fully aware of the tricky road ahead. Your voice is a dream and if I ever get a good deal I can only hope you'd consider narrating my words.
Excellent, well done.
