The Colonel, after all, had nothing to leave - except a letter he had never opened himself, a letter that can only bring further disgrace to the family name. The fourteen short stories in To Cut a Long Story Short show Jeffrey Archer’s great skills with a wide variety of character, of subject and of setting, but all with that trademark twist in the tale. Every reader will have their own favourites: the choices run from love at first sight across the train tracks to the cleverest of confidence tricks, from the quirks of the legal profession - and those who are able to manipulate both sides of the Bar - to the creative financial talents of a member of Her Majesty’s diplomatic service - but for a good cause.

Summary
Cometh the Hour opens with the reading of a suicide note, which has devastating consequences for Harry and Emma Clifton, Giles Barrington and Lady Virginia.
Giles must decide if he should withdraw from politics and try to rescue Karin, the woman he loves, from behind the Iron Curtain. But is Karin truly in love with him, or is she a spy?
Lady Virginia is facing bankruptcy and can see no way out of her financial problems - until she is introduced to the hapless Cyrus T. Grant III from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who's in England to see his horse run at Royal Ascot.
Sebastian Clifton is now the chief executive of Farthings Bank and a workaholic whose personal life is thrown into disarray when he falls for Nadira, a beautiful Indian girl. But her parents have already chosen the man she is going to marry. Meanwhile, Sebastian's rivals, Adrian Sloane and Desmond Mellor, are still plotting to bring him and his chairman, Hakim Bishara, down, so they can take over Farthings.
Harry Clifton remains determined to get Anatoly Babakov released from a gulag in Siberia following the international success of his acclaimed book, Uncle Joe. But then something unexpected happens that none of them could have anticipated.
Cometh the Hour is the penultimate book in the Clifton Chronicles and, like the five previous novels - all of which went to number one on the Sunday Times best-seller list - showcases Jeffrey Archer's extraordinary storytelling with his trademark twists.

Highly entertaining old-fashioned story-telling
Having listened to all the previous books in this series I had to find out what was happening to the Barrington and Clifton families. As with the previous books the author is adept at story-telling that keeps one listening. Lots of cliff-hanging moments as the forces of good and evil are pitted against one another. The baddies are really bad and the goodies improbable, old-fashioned examples of the British fair play and honour in the tradition of John Buchan novels. The characters are at times exaggerated stereotypes; the writing full of clichés, lots of famous name-dropping; and allusions to expensive brands, and yet it is all highly entertaining. Archer's inside knowledge of life in a an open prison was usefully employed!
Alex Jennings magnificent ability to conjure up accents and have a range of voices such that that he is convincing as a 10 year old American girl, an 84 year old baroness, Russian spies etc, etc., certainly added to my enjoyment of this engaging piece of escapism.

Archer at his best
Where does Cometh the Hour rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
After enjoying the last 5 of the Clifton Chronicles I half expected this one to be a disappointment. So i was surprised that i enjoy this one even more than the others. I 've read all of his books so tend to spot the twists coming. However, this didn't spoil the book for me. Praise must also go to the superb reader. Thoroughly recommended.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Cometh the Hour?
Harry speech at the Nobel prize award ceremony.
What about Alex Jennings’s performance did you like?
His dialects brought the characters alive
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Harry speech at the Nobel prize award ceremony.

Jeffrey archer's Cometh the Hour
Written with the authors usual amazing skill and ability to spin a yarn so gripping his novels are impossibly hard to put down. My whole family have chewed their nails to the quick waiting for this last - and may be final? Book in the Barrington/Clifton family saga. It does not disappoint. All the villains seem to meet suitable sticky ends although not without a lot of dramatic twists and turns along the way. The heroes have their own perilous adventures but somehow manage to extradite themselves with honour from every situation. A truly glorious read.
