Summary

A martial artist falls from a cliff to his death. A rival stands, triumphant above.

The beginning of an all too familiar story. Yet, in the time of recuperation and return, time passes and sometimes, the transformation that occurs is not the one you expect.

This is a 4,500-word short story set in the A Thousand Li universe featuring as yet to be seen characters in the universe. Does not need to be listened to to follow the main series.

Great redemption story

Two martial brothers fight with each other, ending when one falls over the edge and lands in the river at the bottom.

He doesn't die, though. Rescued and nursed back to health, he realized that he will need to take many years, decades even, to fix the damage done to his core. During that time, he learns several lessons that change his worldview.

I love the A Thousand Li series, and this short story features two other sect members with their own journeys and their own dao. I really liked the lessons that were learned and the lessons that were then taught to younger, incoming sect members.

I look forward to listening to more short stories in the ATL universe. While this one is narrated by Feodor Chin, rather than Travis Baldree, who narrates the regular series, but Chin still gives a wonderful performance. In some ways, a different narrator is better since there aren't any of the regular cast of characters; a different narrator helped me separate the stories in my head, which was nice.

Different form, different characters, poetic feel

I'd expected a short novel. I got a flashes of a life, almost painted, almost poetic in feeling. Beautiful.

Favorite short of his

Cute, and realistic in a way, good character progress in a very short story.

Beautiful!

This story encompasses fresh elements, perspectives and ideas that demonstrate Tao Wong’s personal depth (growth?). There is perhaps as much to learn in this little story as in any of his longer works: maturity, wisdom, circumspection, forgiveness, strength, sacrifice and the deeper meanings of life and love.

Bravo!

a thousand Li needs a thousand books

this short story may ask of you to play back a few of the paragraph So that you can follow the transitions in time but the subject matter works well and you have to remember that it it is a short story.
