Summary

The first in a trilogy, City of Ghosts is set in the Leningrad of 1951 where the shadows of the war and the threats of Stalinism loom large.

Leningrad, 1951. The shadow of war lingers. Revol Rossel - once a virtuoso violinist with a glittering future - is now a humble state militia cop, forced to investigate desperate crimes in this desperate era. But when five frozen corpses are found neatly arranged between railway lines, Rossel is faced with the most puzzling - and most dangerous - case of his career. His hunt for the truth leads him to the dark heart of Leningrad’s musical establishment, and, ultimately, to the highest levels of the Kremlin itself.

It’s a world he knows intimately. A world where his dreams were shattered. A world where a killer may now be hiding....

A cracking story

Set around desperate Russian history in the 1940’ and 50’s . Very clever plot line with well observed characters.A firm recommendation and well read

Excellent

There are plenty of novels set in the Soviet Union. This one was, thankfully, not just a pale copy of those. The plot hangs on one of the most magnificent yet insane propaganda schemes of all time- the playing of Shostakovich’s 7th Symphony inside besieged Leningrad. I look forward to reading more by this author

Stunning.

Absolutely stunning book. Well narrated and put me in mind of Philip Kerr and his Detective Bernie Gunther. Very atmospheric and dark. The horror of the Soviet Union under Stalin after WW2, add in the fact that everyone was encouraged to report each other to the authoritys then you have a base to write a tingling police story with many layers of horror around that historical time. Can't wait to listen to the next story.

Great thriller, ruined by the wrong narrator.

I downloaded this with the intention of listening alongside reading the paperback. The protagonist is 34 and the narrator sounds too old. Totally derails in energy and intensity of the story.

Far too gory for me

I fully understand that this story is set in violent times and will reflect that. However I found the level of detail of the inhumanity and violence was stomach churning. Worse, every time that I thought “Oh thank goodness we have got that out of the way” the story would visit yet another episode of unutterably foul violence.
Not nice, not actually necessary and definitely not for me.
