About this listen
Love is real. Demons are real. Kill the demons.
A chilling and heartfelt supernatural horror about a young woman searching for love and the secrets of a demonic gay conversion camp, perfect for fans of Stephen Graham Jones, Hailey Piper and Lucy A. Snyder.
Camp Damascus is the world's most effective gay conversion camp. Nestled in the Montana wilderness, parents send their children from around the world to experience the program's 100% success rate.
But, this story isn't about that. This story is about Rose Darling, a God-fearing young lady who can't stop puking up flies. It's about her parents who ignore her visions of an eerie woman with sagging, pale skin who watches from the woods. It's about the desires deep inside Rose that don't seem to make any sense, and her waking nightmares that are beginning to feel more like memories. And maybe, just maybe, it's a little bit about Camp Damascus after all.

interesting story
interesting story, but the lack of oomph from the narrator speaking with a monotone really became boring super fast and distracted from the story.

I wanted it to be great, but it was just good…
It's rare that saying a book was good is actually a disappointment, but it's possibly because I had such high expectations. Seeing that it was a Hugo Award finalist and tackles interesting themes of straight-conversion in the horror genre hooked me immediately. And while the first act was full of genuinely creepy moments and a satisfyingly obscure mystery, it felt as if it all devolved into something safe, samey, and not all that exciting at the end.
I also understand that, especially with horror, it's a tightrope between explaining too much and explaining too little—getting that balance right is difficult. Unfortunately, it didn't feel like the right balance was struck here. I think the novel could've benefitted from less explanation and more mystery.
That being said, I made it to the end. It was, for the most part, enjoyable, and Mara Wilson was a fantastic narrator—I have no notes on her performance.

Fantastic First Novel
Really enjoyed the message, as you’d expect from the works of Dr. Tingle. Solidly written, especially for a first novel, and looking forward to his next. Great performance from the VA too.
