Summary

A new collection of four King’s Watch novellas.

Find out what Conrad (and especially Vicky) get up to when they’re not cracking the big cases in this collection of novellas from Mark Hayden’s King’s Watch universe: Byways, the less travelled roads of magick.

The collection features:

  • Phantom Stag
  • Wings over Water
  • French Leave
  • Fire Games

It does not include Mina’s story, Ring of Troth.

Fans of Mark Hayden’s books will know that they overflow with characters, journeys, adventures and new discoveries.

These novellas capture some of the overflow and bottle it for you to discover:

In Phantom Stag, Vicky takes on her first solo case, with almost no help from Uncle Conrad. After a suspicious death in the Forest of Arden, the King’s Watch must track down a killer, and only Vicky can venture into the Enchanted wood. In there, she also meets Karina Kent, who goes on to feature in her own adventures.

With Wings Over Water, Conrad takes a detour to the East Riding to solve a severe case of Haunting. The Royal Exorcist asks for his help because she has what she thinks are the ghosts of airmen past. These she is used to, but there’s something wrong. Something that calls for Conrad’s special blend of tact and diplomacy....

In French Leave, we catch up with two characters from the very beginning of the King’s Watch series: Keira Faulkner and Adaryn ap Owain. Keira was Conrad’s first enemy, and she is in exile in France. Adaryn is on the run for unleashing the Dragon. When Keira petitions to return home, Conrad has a price: find Adaryn. Discover what happens when Keira goes missing and Vicky tells the story of their adventure in France.

The final novella is Fire Games, or how Vicky lost her shirt twice in one night. Conrad is away in Spain, so he asks Vicky to keep an eye on his sisters when Sofía makes her debut presenting the magical magick show of the Fire Games. The only problem for Vicky is that it’s taking place in the grand mansion of the Hawkins family, and we all know how Vicky feels about the magickal aristocracy....

Each novella is complete and makes an enchanting journey through the realms of magick. Follow the Byways of the King’s Watch and download today!

Fantastic as always

What’s not to love, Mark Hayden doesn’t disappoint and I loved getting to know some of the other characters in more detail

A treat as always

Having these novellas available in audio format is great and complements the audio of the main novels really well. Can see me jumping over to listen to the appropriate story in chronological order the next time I do a relisten to the series.

Tamsin and Ciaran do a great job of bringing the stories and characters to life as usual although there were a couple of points during Wings Over Water where Ciaran seemed to change/drop Conrad's voice which jarred a little but not enough to drop a rating point.
