Summary

Can his sister’s fake boyfriend become his real one?

When Kendall O'Hara catches his boyfriend cheating, he runs to his sister - the only person he can rely on in the city. But she's on a business trip, so Kendall finds himself temporary roomies with her super hot and equally kind live-in boyfriend.

Luke Hale's family has made him so jaded regarding relationships, that he’s had no problem pretending to be his best friend’s boyfriend. It’s never been a problem, until her sweet, adorable brother arrives. Kendall’s passion for his food channel is contagious and his openness and vulnerability are intoxicating.

They both know the other should be off-limits, but spending time together - cooking, talking, laughing - is so easy and wonderful. Their attraction is undeniable and once Kendall learns that Luke is actually available, all bets are off. Sizzling chemistry quickly gives way to real feelings. But Kendall’s stay is temporary. Can their friends with benefits arrangement blossom into a forever love or will they both wind up alone again?

Brother-in-Law Material is a sweet and sexy M/M romance with the following tropes: fake boyfriend, temporary roommates, friends with benefits, best friend's brother.

Nooooo, I really wanted to like this!

I've been aware of this book for a little while, and was intrigued by the storyline, but Michael Ferraiuolo recording it bumped it right up my reading/listening schedule. The book contains so many aspects to draw me in: proximity, fake boyfriends, cooking, even a trapped in the lift scene, but somehow it just didn't come together for me. I did not get a sense of intimacy between the MCs, and was not at all convinced that there was love.

The book started off really well. Kendall is a slightly shallow but instantly lovable character, who had me laughing out loud in the opening scenes. I loved his obsession with food, and that it even eclipsed his heartbreak. Kendall is very much a stereotypical millenial: a food vlogger who takes photos of all his meals, but can't boil an egg without burning down the kitchen. He makes you feel like you want to take care of him. Luke seemed like a natural caretaker when Kendall first moved in, and I was excited by the dynamic between them.

Things start going downhill as soon as they sleep together. Firstly, Kendall ignores a lot with regards to Luke's decade-long fake relationship with Kendall's sister Keira. He's like "Ok great, let's f**k" when any sane person would be asking why on earth they would have done such a thing. The motivation behind the fake relationship is very weak, and doesn't justify the effort, lies and confusion created. It doesn't even really make sense since Keira was not opposed to one day finding a partner. Then Luke starts on the "I'm not good enough to have a relationship with you, but I'll shag you since you're here" mantra, and this just killed the rest of the book for me.

This is not an uncommon trope, and is one guaranteed to frustrate a reader, but usually I'll be thinking "Get your head out of your arse, you belong together!". This time around I was thinking "Run Kendall! Get the f**k out of there!". I think the way Luke's behaviour dampened Kendall's spirit really got to me. Luke seemed to suck the life out of Kendall (and not in the fun way) so that the bright, effervescent character we started out with was a shadow of himself by the end. He only seemed to be relaxed when out with Luke's cousin Mizuki (who seemed to have inherited all the charisma in their family). I hoped that Kendall would run off with Mizuki, or better yet, discover that he could stand on his own two feet. Kendall seemed to be always leaning on one man or another, and that left him vulnerable to their careless treatment. If he'd had more self confidence, he would have told Luke about himself, and not put up with being picked up and tossed aside as Luke chose.

There was more misery than joy with this couple, and - though it was never going to happen - they definitely would have done better to go their separate ways.

Now, I just adore Michael Ferraiuolo. If it were any other narrator I probably would not have finished the book. His voicing of Kendall in particular was perfect, and he put as much energy into the book as he possibly could have.

For me, the most memorable takeaway from this book is that Americans apparently call Bake Off 'The Great British Baking Show'. Like, do they dub over every time someone says "bake off"?

Sweet romance with sister's best friend

Overall, this was an enjoyable romance to listen to. It's got a fake relationship, though not between the MCs, sister's best friend, roommate romance. A lot going on through the book but an easy listen with the wonderful Michael Ferraiuolo doing the narration. Luke is a lovely man, really kind and caring but doesn't want to give any hope to Kendall when they find they are equally attracted to each other and both single. His relationship and family history has him thinking that he would be no good for a partner. Kendall has a lot going on with breaking up with his partner when he's found cheating, staying with his sister's best friend and supposed boyfriend. He also has an ongoing vlog regarding food, which is extra entertaining with his extreme lack of cooking skills. Luke steps up to help there with great results and when Kendall is in need of support around his ex. Luke's kindness and Kendall's needs bring them back together over again and there's only so long they can stay away. There's a bit of angst as to the will they/won't they as Luke is determined that he isn't a permanent choice for anyone but especially Kendall.
I liked all of the characters involved in the story, Luke's cousin brought a bit of fun and jealousy into the mix. Scenes between the MC's range between extremely hot and heavy to fun and exasperation. There's a good balance between the two and I liked how things played out between the two men overall. I do think that Kendall could have stood up and supported Luke a little more than worrying about his ex and himself so much but it worked out for them eventually.
Michael, again, does a fantastic job of narration. There doesn't seem to be any trope that he can't cover and he draws me immediately into the story and endears the characters to me.

Cute

This was a really sweet mutual pining book. It's packed full of tropes: fake boyfriends, enforced living arrangements, misunderstanding, a meddling family member.
Both guys were adorable. I love that Kendall can't cook but still has a foodie YT channel.
Narrator does a great job.

Everything Is Not As It Has Appeared.

MM, My Sisters Boyfriend, Romance, Such a funny twist to the My Sisters Boyfriend theme. I laughed so much while listening to the book. Although there are angsty moments on the whole the story is light-hearted and fun with lots of steam. Narrated brilliantly by Michael Ferraiuolo. lots going on throughout the story.

An awesome brother in law!

I had read this book and loved it but listening to it on Michael Ferraiuolo’s voice is heaven. Luke is Kendall’s sister’s boyfriend and the one Kendall turns to one awful night when he found out his boyfriend cheating. Well, he was looking for his sister and instead he found her bff and roommate. Their romance is sweet, Kendall is adorable, Luke a bit frustrating and then Mizuki appears to trouble the waters. Luke would have to man up if he doesn’t want to lose Kendall. Adorable!

A great twist on a trope

I loved this double twist on the fake boyfriend trope. Kendall and Luke make a perfect couple and when you combine that with an ex- causing trouble and lots of food in the plot it was perfect. Michael Ferraiuolo is a favorite audiobook performer and here he does a superb job of springing the surprises and showing the deeper emotions of the characters.

Beautiful narration!

This book is simply beautiful! The story even after what happened at the beginning was so happy, bubbling and sweet that I couldn't stop reading it until the very end, and Mr Ferraiuolo made an outstanding job getting the feeling of the characters and bringing them alive. I could even taste the wonderful food mentioned in the story! A cute and endearing love story and a perfect narration that complemented it. WOW!

Enjoyable but much better with narration

I haven’t read a lot from this author, but I enjoyed how she constructed this fake boyfriend (one of my favorite tropes!), friends-to-lovers story. However, I do think it went a bit awry in the execution. Admittedly, I did find the plot to be a bit bizarre, with gaps, particularly in the relationship development between Kendall and Luke. I really liked them but their pairing didn’t quite gel for me. It needed more development or backstory … it just felt a bit forced. That being said, it’s definitely sweet, steamy, low angst and on the whole, enjoyable. Mizuki is totally the star of the show in this book, along with the audiobook narrator, Michael Ferraiuolo. His narration (as per usual) is on-point. He does an excellent job differentiating between the characters, and his pacing and intonations are spot-on. If you are going to jump into this book, I highly recommend doing it with the audiobook. It’s definitely a better experience in my opinion.
