About this listen
Have you ever felt invisible?
Bernie Moon has given her life to other people: her husband, her son, her friends (who are these days, mostly online). At nineteen she was full of dreams and ambitions; now almost fifty, and going through the menopause, she's fading, fast. Heartbroken and hormonal, she often feels like she's losing her mind.
But when a young woman is murdered in a local park, it sparks a series of childhood memories in Bernie and with them, a talent that has lain dormant most of her adult life.
She promised herself she'd never think of it again. When she was a teenager, it almost destroyed her. But now she's older, could it be the power she's been missing?
Could it be the chance to, finally, make them look?©2023 Joanne Harris (P)2023 Orion Publishing Group Limited

Started interesting, then weird, then boring
Just too much, tryjng to include and highlight every modern gender issue in one book, I honestly didn't feel that bothered about any of the characters. But it was an ok listen. If I was reading it, I think I may have given up.

Brilliant, thought provoking!!
Thought provoking joyous slant eyed look at how power passes those with power, and those without are made to carry the can.
Magical as always

Not for me- political & heavy going
All a bit too heavy going and political for my tastes. As a woman in the same sort of time of life as the main character I thought I’d get something from it but actually found it thoroughly depressing my mood. Also it was rather confusing knowing who was who in the story. It clarified exactly why I no longer bother with social media which I personally liken to being a moth around a flame and don’t fancy getting burnt by it.

Outstanding!
Brilliantly narrated, I felt completely connected with Bernie Moon, like (and I mean this) she was in my head, speaking my mind! Such a subtle but on point reflection of modern tensions, this was one of the very best books I have ever enjoyed.

Loved it!
I don't usually write reviews but wanted to say how much I enjoyed this book. I loved the idea of a menopausal woman coming into power rather than fading away. I loved the reflection of society and the glimpses of humour. I loved how deep the characters felt. Joanne Harris is a superb writer. The narration was brilliant too.

A period piece
Behold the crest of the rising tide of menopause fiction! It's about bloody time... and it's bound to get better.
The central idea of a midlife Carrie is excellent. There are another five great short story ideas in here too. Sadly the writing swings from cringe to journalistic and I'm not really sure I understood the protagonist's superpower.
It's also a snapshot of contemporary gender issues: gender identity, feminism, me too, midlife women are all referenced, sometimes toe-curlingly. Imogen Stubbs does well to reduce the cringe factor.
Personal bugbears: she unrealistically takes up running aged 49 without getting injured. Resistance training does more to benefit us in midlife than chronic cardio does. Having her deadlift 100kg would be far more empowering than a 5k! And does that woman eat ANY protein or is she entirely fuelled by cakes?! However at least there's zero glorification of weight loss, well done.

I’m a man but I really enjoyed this book!
I really enjoyed Broken Light, which deals with the main character Bernie, who is dealing with the menopause and middle age. Like a lot of people Bernie has lots of baggage from her childhood and a fractious relationship with her mother and husband. Not my normal type of book, but I really enjoyed it.

Loved it
Revisiting Joanne Harris after several years. What a story I loved it. Great narration - which is so important. I was absorbed and unlike many audio books I had to rewind if I got distracted as I didn’t want to miss anything.
