Learning boundaries and speaking up

I have been on a journey of burnout between two jobs for the last year. I work 80+ hrs per week between the two and then the normal stresses of my family life are all building up. I am finding myself trapped between work deadlines, raising my kids, handling their mental health needs, trying to handle my own mental health needs, and trying to be everything for everyone. I had decided at least that one place I needed to gain more control over one of my day jobs. As I learned about the 5 steps in the burnout resilience formula, I learned how to be able to add boundaries and shield myself against the physical and mental toll that the burnout was having on me. Learning to preserve my focus and energy by establishing these boundaries allowed me to value my own needs.

One takeaway I have already started on is recognizing the role of leadership in workplace culture. I have started talking to my boss more about how I am feeling and how the culture of our team is contributing to my burnout. He has been very open to hearing me and even started providing solutions and ideas to help me. We have already started shifting some of the projects that are weighing on me to other people who do not have enough work to do.
The book has a theme throughout it which emphasizes the importance of contributing to a workplace culture that prioritizes mental health and well-being for everyone around you. Being able to speak up about burnout is important and should be more accepted. Either we speak up about the burnout and it is accepted or we leave our jobs for a less stressful one.

One way I am contributing at work is by now hosting a quick 30-minute meeting with my team (voluntary based) to help teach them about burnout, what we can do for each other, how we can start to recover, and then also adding in laughter therapy and how acts of kindness in our daily lives can be so impactful.

Whatever you learn from this book, be sure to share it with your coworkers. Slowly you can begin to shift your workplace culture to a place you cannot wait to go to every day.

It's not workaholism - its burn out

During COVID I worked in a hospital. The job was demanding but COVID took stress up to a level I'd never had to deal with before. The self-care I had used as coping before (like travel and visiting friends) was no longer an option. As the months dragged on, I suffered physical changes due to the stress. I was burned out. I wish I'd had this book back then.
Now I have a new job. I only work 3 days a week and shy away from big projects and roles. I'm still worried about getting sucked into the downward spiral I suffered before. Thanks to this audiobook, I have joined a gym and prioritize sleep. I also spend 5-10 min every morning doing small tasks like making my bed and taking out the trash. These small routines provide a sense of accomplishment at the start of my day. It sets the tone for the rest of the day.
