Summary
A boy like no other embarks on a transformative journey of magic and self-discovery in the next enchanting Whimbrel House novel by Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg.
Merritt Fernsby’s life has changed considerably since he inherited Whimbrel House. He’s engaged to Hulda Larkin, who opened his eyes to the uncanny. And he’s grown quite protective of his uncle Owein—several generations, and iterations, removed. Owein is presently inhabiting the body of a mixed-breed terrier when Merritt receives a missive from none other than Alexandrina Victoria, the Queen of England: I am interested in your dog.
It’s the queen’s duty to the peerage to keep British wizardry empowered. Her offer: England will find a human vessel for Owein, marry him into the royal family, and add this remarkable soul-shifter to its lineage. For Owein, a boy trapped in the body of a pup, it’s a dream come true. How can Merritt refuse? However, once they are in London and in consortium with a necromancer, the situation doesn’t feel right, both with their hosts and the house they inhabit. Owein is having nightmares. And Hulda’s premonitions warn of danger in Merritt’s future. Clearly, someone doesn’t want them in town.
But after two hundred years of being cursed to drift, Owein is determined to chart his own destiny. He’s ready to defy whatever chaos is coming. After all, Owein is the master of chaos, and with Merritt and Hulda’s love and magical support, he can overcome anything.
Critic reviews
“Merritt Fernby and Hulda Larkin are back in the third installment of the Whimbrel House series (after Heir of Uncertain Magic, 2023). Fans of the series and fantasy tales will be pleased with this story.”—Booklist
“Holmberg delights us with magical antics and nonstop action. She makes us care even more about the characters…This is a beautifully conceived fantasy, and Holmberg makes it clear that Hulda and Merritt’s adventures are far from over.”—Bookreporter

Delightful
I loved everything! I’m looking forward to the next book, hopefully more Druid connections and seeing how Merritt gets on with his new magic abilities.

I love this series
I really enjoyed this series of books from Charlie N Holmberg. They are funny, well written, with good characters, and a whimsical world. The narrators chosen to voice the series are well chosen. The end of the book hints at another story in this world which is great news.

Just as good as the others
I really enjoyed this story, meeting more people and learning about the wider world of magic. I also love their relationship, it feels so healthy as relatable, despite all the madness surrounding them!

I love this series!!
I love all Charlie N Holmberg and this series in particular is fantastic- the characters are lovely and finally we have wonderful conclusions for our 3 main ones. I hope this doesn’t mean it’s the end… I have to say there were enough little threads left to suggest it could happily continue……

Loving this series!
I’m so glad I stumbled upon this series, Charlie is now one of my favourite authors of all time! Her books contain just the right amount of fantasy but are well grounded in reality, making the story believable and the characters relatable, it’s perfect. If you like magic realism and adventure with a bit of romance, then this series is for you.
I’m in love with Hulda and Merritt, and I’m thrilled to learn that there are two more books after this one! It was wonderful to see Hulda’s character development here, to see her let herself go a little bit and let Merritt love her more as she realises that that is what she truly wants :) loved the action in this one too, it was exciting from start to finish. I can’t wait to see what the future brings for our heroes!
