Summary

A full-speed-ahead oral history of the nearly two-decade making of the cultural phenomenon Mad Max: Fury Road—with more than 130 new interviews with key members of the cast and crew, including Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, and director George Miller, from the pop culture reporter for The New York Times, Kyle Buchanan.

It won six Oscars and has been hailed as the greatest action film ever, but it is a miracle Mad Max: Fury Road ever made it to the screen… or that anybody survived the production. The story of this modern classic spanned nearly two decades of wild obstacles as visionary director George Miller tried to mount one of the most difficult shoots in Hollywood history.

Production stalled several times, stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron clashed repeatedly in the brutal Namib Desert, and Miller’s crew engineered death-defying action scenes that were among the most dangerous ever committed to film. Even accomplished Hollywood figures are flummoxed by the accomplishment: As the director Steven Soderbergh has said, “I don’t understand how they’re not still shooting that film, and I don’t understand how hundreds of people aren’t dead.”

Kyle Buchanan takes readers through every step of that moviemaking experience in vivid detail, from Fury Road’s unexpected origins through its outlandish casting process to the big-studio battles that nearly mutilated a masterpiece. But he takes the deepest dive in reporting the astonishing facts behind a shoot so unconventional that the film’s fantasy world began to bleed into the real lives of its cast and crew. As they fought and endured in a wasteland of their own, the only way forward was to have faith in their director’s mad vision. But how could Miller persevere when almost everything seemed to be stacked against him?

With hundreds of exclusive interviews and details about the making of Fury Road, readers will be left with one undeniable conclusion: There has never been a movie so drenched in sweat, so forged by fire, and so epic in scope.

Read by Fred Berman, Aspen Vincent, Dan Bittner, Derek Perkins, Eva Kaminsky, Fiona Hardingham, Gary Furlong, George Newbern, Ione Butler, Jason Culp, Jeff Gurner, Katherine Littrell, Leon Nixon, Lisa Flanagan, Malk Williams, Michael Crouch, Polly Lee, Ralph Lister, Robin Miles, Samuel Roukin, and Will M. Good book - Terrible Accents

Really interesting read but the accents are appallingly bad - whoever tried to voice Tom Hardy as a mockney - it’s like a bad comedy skit as are some of the American attempts at doing Australian and South African…

A nice read but some seriously hilarious voice work!!!

Commentaries are too many and redundant

Interesting to hear the story behind the film but the way it’s edited with all the different commentaries (cliches mostly) makes it hard to listen.

A must-read for anyone who loves Fury Road

Though the accents of the actors reading the interviews can be off, this book paints a brilliant picture of how Fury Road came to be. If you love the movie and the film making process you will love this book.

Amazing what the production went through!

I’ve recently revisited Fury Road while taking time with this book. You can literally see the blood, sweat and tears that went into it. This book is an entertaining insight into the hell behind the scenes and the victory for all that is one of the most ambitious and entertaining action movies ever made!

The greatest film of all time with a book to match

Fantastic detailing of what is arguably one of the greatest movies of all time.

It's well researched with warts and all on display.

Various Voice actors used to represent those part of the production and otherwise so its great and easy to follow.

A must read.

Really interesting if you're into film

Very interesting stories but some of the cast were sub-par. especially the person voicing Tom Hardy, sounded like a parody rather than an actual British person.

Great to hear how it all came together and the journey to just get the film done. Def one for fans of the film itself and of filmmaking

Ambitious movie, ambitious audiobook

I’ve never listened to an audiobook so quickly - I couldn’t put this down.
There are some audiobooks with multiple narrators, but hearing so many voices in a single production is glorious, seemingly every interviewee providing a real voice enactment.
I’ve never known such care put into the recording of an audiobook - truly a feat to rival the movie itself : )
Hyperbolic experiences all round! What a lovely day

5 Hours of Story Crammed Into 10 Hours of Audio

Don't expect a cohesive story here, this is a collection of anecdotes and audio snippets from the makers, cast, and crew of Fury Road and a whole bunch of outsiders who had nothing to do with the production. Seriously, who cares what Patton Oswalt thought about the movie? Due to the format, the actual information about the movie is spread out and constantly interrupted with inanities.

Around 40% substance, 30% Hollywood butt-smooching, and 30% feminist blah-blah.

Really takes you on the journey behind the scenes of the entire filmmaking experience. I’ve never read a book quite like this, and will be going back to re-watch Fury Road!

One of the best oral histories of the making of Fury Road that I've ever listened to. Definitely in the top five.

It’s hard to listen to

Love the story. Love the movie so the making of it I was very interested. The story of the whole process is fun. The hard part is listening to all the voices. They introduce themselves when they talk sometimes. But other times I’m guessing “is this George miller talking?” Or someone completely different.

A Must Listen for Film Buffs

A filmmaking odyssey as compelling as the movie itself (which is one of the greatest action movies in the history of film). The multiple narrators do such a great job that it felt like I was hearing the stories told by the people who were there.
