Summary

Bloomsbury presents Between Two Evils by Eva Dolan, read by David Thorpe.

As the country bakes under the relentless summer sun, a young doctor is found brutally murdered at his home in a picturesque Cambridgeshire village.

Is his death connected to his private life - or his professional one?

Dr Joshua Ainsworth worked at an all-female detention centre, one still recovering from a major scandal a few years before. Was he the whistle-blower - or an instigator?

As Detective Sergeant Ferreira and Detective Inspector Zigic begin to painstakingly reconstruct Dr Ainsworth’s last days, they uncover yet more secrets and more suspects. But this isn’t the only case that’s demanding their attention - a violent criminal has been released on a technicality and the police force know he will strike again: the only question is who will be his first victim....

Critic reviews

"Gripping from the first page, this is crime fiction with heart, a social conscience and an ending that packs a powerful emotional punch. I was a fan before. Now I’m in awe." (Paul Burston)

Good plot but could have been shorter.
Enjoyed it but less compelling than previous books by author

Absorbing

I love this series and have been watching out for this fifth book for what feels like forever, so I kept it on my ipod for a while before listening to savour the pleasure for longer, but I just finished it (sadly) and have to write a review to shout it's praises.

The two evils are a recently released rapist who's been released due to an issue with the evidence in his case and is already making threatening appearances to DS Ferreira, and whoever murdered a doctor who had worked at the local Immigration Detention Centre.

It starts hard, relentlessly drives you through the story towards a very satisfactory ending (which some have called predictable but I was delighted by).

David Thorpe was a pleasure to listen to as always.

It's absolutely marvellous, buy it now ...
