About this listen

Darkus is miserable. His dad has disappeared, and now he is living next door to the most disgusting neighbours ever. A giant beetle called Baxter comes to his rescue. But can the two solve the mystery of his dad's disappearance, especially when links emerge to cruel Lucretia Cutter and her penchant for beetle jewellery?

A coffee-mug mountain, home to a million insects, could provide the answer - if Darkus and Baxter are brave enough to find it.

From start to finish this is a great story. A mystery that starts of at a ripping pace and never let's up. Wonderfully drawn characters both good and bad in nature. The the idea underpinning it all is brilliantly original and will enthuse children and grown-ups alike. The author's reading finishes it all off beautifully - great voices.

Brilliant story

An unusual story with familiar themes of friendship, loss and heroism narrated brilliantly by the author.

Entertaining and original

There is danger and Lucretia Cutter is a villain in the best tradition of Cruella De Vil. However, the story has originality and insight into beetles, friendships and the mystery of the disappearance of the main character’s dad. The science of genetics, mutation lingers in the background with the theme of evil scientist too.

The good beetles are lovable, beautiful and win the day.

We loved the parts with the Beatles and how they mixed the human genes and how clever Baxter was. How the horrible lady transforms through the story.
Really exciting and it kept you in suspense, you could not predict what was going to happen as you listened to the story.
The authors ready is excellent and as you can see from the review our three boys aged 8-9-11 were captivated.
