About this listen
While away at college, Joelle finds herself the victim of an abusive boyfriend. After barely escaping his clutches, she finds herself three states away, where the owners of JJ’s Diner help her. With Jake and Carly’s help, she learns to cope with her past and starts a new life.
Over time, Joelle undergoes an internal makeover - one that leaves her stronger and more confident. With her new life and friends, she moves forward...happier than ever.
Just as she begins to breathe easier, her past comes back to haunt her when she runs into Nathan, her abusive ex.
Has he come back to claim her? Will her past undo her when she learns her childhood wasn’t as she thought? Will she put her past behind her for the final time, or will her discovery scar her for life?

Edge of my seat!
This book by Elaine Marie too me by surprise. I loved the first book in the series, but this one really caught my attention and I was glued until the end. Joelle is running from an abusive relationship from her college boyfriend Nathan. She settles three states away and is lucky to meet Jake and Carly. Under their wing, she is able to get her life on track and rebuild a new Jo. Making friends over the years and finishing school, Jo finds herself comfortable and attracted to Jimmy, a regular customer at the diner she works in. But should she feel comfortable? Will her past come back to haunt her? And is it how she remembers it? There are several twists and turns in this romantic suspense, sure to catch you off guard and keep you listening til the very end. And you will be surprised! It's a fast paced, thrilling story with steamy romance, one you are sure to enjoy.
Riley Raye gives a commanding performance. I enjoyed her pace and voice throughout the story as she gives each character a lot of emotion. It is easy to tell the characters apart and she creates a feeling of suspense.

Good story about getting strong after trauma
Jo was abused by her boyfriend and finally found the strength to leave him. She was saved by Jake and Carly (who are awesome) and she grows strong and independent with time. This was a story about getting stronger even in the face of adversity and I loved to see her grow (though there were moments of irrational behavior but I do think that’s normal for someone who suffered from such a trauma). There were some inconsistencies to the story, such as the number of years that passed. While there is a romance in this story, it is secondary compared to her growth. (the romantic interest, James, is the brother of Nick, from the first book; Jenna and Nick are also in this story)
Riley Raye, the narrator is ok- she needs a slightly better range for her voices because there were some times I didn’t know who was speaking (and Jake’s “voice” was way too feminine.) But she did a good job telling the story with emotion.

angst...
This was quite different for me, but engrossing all the same. A definite must listen to. Elaine Marie's writing has depth and just grabs your attention. This was my first book my Riley Raye. All in all, it is not for the faint of heart, but a great story none the less.

A Second Chance at Life and Love
This can be read as a standalone even though it is in a trilogy. Actually, it took me a little bit to realize how Because I Can and Because I Won't were connected. I love stories like these where the main female character is such a strong individual. Because I Won't is a story about overcoming one's past but also a story about discovering love. There are some VERY unexpected twists in this shorter listen that make it super engaging. This author may not write longer stories (yet🤞), but she is able to make these shorter stories pack a punch.
I thought the narrator did a great job in this performance and her voice fit Jo very well. She kept character voices consistent and did a fabulous job bringing out Jo's strength as a female main character.

A LOT of Secrets.....
Here in "Because I Won't," there was a lot of mystery, suspense, thriller, HOT sex, and SECRETS.
And if that wasn't enough to spook you, there was a stalker that lied and waited for his victim....
Elaine Marie really went dark in book 2. Just when you thought you had it figured out, you were wrong. She did some incredible work, I can't imagine what book 3 will be like.
This was my 1st time hearing Riley Raye narrator but she didn't disappoint. I most definitely recommend "Because I Won't" to others.

Full of suspense and twists!
This is a fairly short audiobook but it is crammed full of story! This story follows Jo and her heartbreaking story of abuse, it also brings in James who is Nick's brother from the first series so it was nice to hear a bit about Jenna and his future after the first story in the series. Elaine wrote this story with great sensitivity and I loved that we saw how Jo brought herself together and became stronger after what happened to her. There was some hot romance and an amazing twist at the end, I love the way Elaine ends her stories with surprises you would never expect! Riley did a great job of narrating this story, bringing all the emotions of Jo throughout.
