Summary

Out in the darkness of space, something is targeting the Greatships.

With their vast cargo holds and a crew that could fill a city, the Greatships are the lifeblood of human-occupied space, transporting an unimaginable volume - and value - of goods from City, the greatest human orbital, all the way to Tradepoint at the other, to trade for xenoglas with an unknowable alien species.

It has always been Marca Nbaro's dream to achieve the near-impossible: escape her upbringing and venture into space.

All it took, to make her way onto the crew of the Greatship Athens, was thousands of hours in simulators, dedication and pawning or selling every scrap of her old life in order to forge a new one. But though she's made her way onboard with faked papers, leaving her old life - and scandals - behind isn't so easy.

She may have just combined all the dangers of her former life, with all the perils of the new....

New author to me and I didn’t know what to expect

Went in blind and thoroughly enjoyed this adventure. The story raced along and kept me hooked the whole time whilst being excellently brought to life by Nneka Okoye’s incredibly skilled narration. I really hope there is a part 2!

My new favourite scifi novel!

Brilliant narration drew me into this epic, gripping and real-feeling scifi.

It has all of Cameron's super settings, characters, history, and action. It almost felt like a historical fiction with the level of detail - which totally brings the lot to life - and yet wows you with the sheer scale and wonders of space.

Genuinely my favourite scifi novel for a long time, if not ever. I connected with it that much. Iain M Banks but with real characters you can connect a lot more with, imho.

A fantastic Space Opera

I'm hit and miss these days with long novels from new-to-me authors, but this one not only hit every note, it gave me a few more I didn't realise I needed. A very good build-up with some interesting characters that seem to carry the story along at quite the pace. Plenty to enjoy, and as the first book in this series it makes the follow-up a must-read.

Disappointed

Overly long and ponderous adventure with a lead who can do no wrong, a superhero really. Expected so much more, won't be continuing with series unfortunately.

Fantastic

Though difficult to get into, like many exceptional books, keep going to find it a little investment in massive reading / listening pleasure

Enjoyable Science Fiction

So while this novel may start with a hundred clichés, it very quickly starts to overcome some of the tropes of the genre, with some smartly written prose. Which give depth to the characters, giving real texture to the crew, also it and expands on the common fish out of water concept, by building a world that covers the heroines shortcomings and makes you invest in her. A really enjoyable romp, with plenty of thrills and spills, and tense space combat scenes pepper the novel. This is a thoughtful and considered science fiction novel, with a hard science fiction edge.

Love it

The main character is a bit to perfect. But otherwise a great book. Very well read.

Brilliant book!

I really liked this one. Excellently performed by Nneka, with a great variety of nuance in voices. The story itself was really well done. Yes, Umbaro is lucky at points, but I love all the different characters and their interactions together and that's the overriding thought when I think of the book. Can't wait for Deep Black!!

Not a fan

I love my sci-fi and fantasy. I have also enjoyed other books by Miles Cameron but I found this dull, repetitive, and disappointing.

The first interesting part was in the last 40 minutes. The protagonist can do no wrong, the AI has an odd renaissance period accent.

There is plenty of focus on clothes, not really something I have ever cared about in a Sci-Fi book, and some of the character names annoy me. Apologies for the spelling but Quak-Quak? Seriously? Perhaps the character is some kind of androgynous android.

I found myself allowing this book to play out while I worked and had no interest in rewinding to see what I missed. There was no danger as our young protagonist can do everything on her own while describing her outfits and shyly accepting here medals.

Not for me, I returned it. Hate to do that to an Author I have nearly ten books from.
