About this listen
Ex-police detective Michael McLaren is determined to have a peaceful holiday after the fiasco of his first attempt at Windermere, so he stops at a bed-and-breakfast in Moorton, a village in Cumbria. But mystery and murder seek him out, and he soon succumbs to the B&B owner’s plea to investigate the year-old death of her daughter’s fiancé, a young musician.
The Lake District parish seems peaceful, but a rival musician’s jealousy and a business partner’s anger boil beneath the façade. Mix that with "Barmy Barry’s" sightings of fairy lights at the castle, references to Uther Pendragon's return, and the secrets in the woods, and McLaren finds his sanity shaky.
When the vicar is attacked and Barry disappears, McLaren sets a trap for the killer. But as it plays out, his concern shifts from the potential capture to praying he and his friend can escape with their lives.

Brilliant Mystery Thriller
Whilst on holiday in the Lake District, former police officer Michael McLaren is asked by a local innkeeper to look into a suspicious death that happened a year ago.
If you like slow burning, well written, character driven, murder mysteries then you'll love the McLaren mysteries.
For an extra treat, listen to the audio book and enjoy the mellifluous tones of the narrator who has a real knack for regional accents.
An excellent series

Excellent!
Another Excellent listen from Jo Heistand, this time Mike McLaren is on his way to Whitby when he stops at a small village where he discovers an unsolved murder, and being Mike he cannot help looking in to the crime. Lots of action and a very interesting intricate plot make this a great story. Callum Hale's narration is very good with a wealth of different voices and accents although a supposedly Yorkshire landlord I must say was abysmal. Overall though a recommended listen.
I was kindly given a copy of the book by the author and leave this honest review.

Excellent series
This is a great character driven series. I hadn't listened to this book, so listening to the book out of order, but it didnt really matter. It is a definite slow burn but I like that as you really get into the characters and over the course of the series you can see how it develops. It is a very interesting crime.
The narrator has a wonderful knack for the accents and it works so well.
