Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.
The globe-trotting spy thriller that inspired the upcoming action blockbuster
Argylle , featuring a star-studded cast including Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Samuel L. Jackson, and John Cena, directed by Matthew Vaughn of Kingsman trilogy fame.
One Russian magnate's dream of restoring a nation to greatness has set in motion a chain of events which will take the world to the brink of chaos. Only Frances Coffey, the CIA's most legendary spymaster, can prevent it. But to do so, she needs someone special.

Enter Argylle. His life came to a crashing halt as a teenager. Since when he has been treading water, building barriers between himself and the world. Until one moment of compassion and brilliance will bring him to the attention of the most powerful woman in the secret world.

Coffey knows all about Argylle's dark past. She knows it haunts him. But she also knows it may give him the skills to join the team going up against one of the most powerful men in the world. His crash course in espionage will take him from the jungles of Thailand to the boulevards of Monaco, from the monasteries of Mount Athos to a forgotten cavern buried deep in the mountains.

It is a deathly rollercoaster ride that will either make him - or break him...

Decent but not stand out

The book is well written but some of the plot Ellen’s are just quite ridiculous. Nazi treasure and Russian megalomaniacs? A bit lazy

Missions in Action

Highly readable action packed adventure - made for an excellent Audible book too. Haven't seen the film yet, but will do shortly.

Great story, like reading a film!

Very action based which was fun for a book, and as far fetched as a good film! Worth the listen and possibly better than the film by the sounds of it?

Fresh take on an action thriller -chronic delivery

Ticks all the boxes apart from the performance… I’m European and it ruined it for me with the absolutely shocking pronunciation of places. It was an utter distraction …. and let the story telling down.

Unexpected Brilliance

Wow I was hooked and devoured this brilliant book as soon as I downloaded it. Twists, turns, excitement, explosions this has it all.
Hurry up and write the next encounter Elly, because I simply can’t wait to find out what’s happening next with Aubrey Argylle 🧡

Decent , fun yarn

The story itself is good, moving at a decent pace. The narration was only average as there were too many lapses in accent and pronunciation. If a book is to be narrated by an American, why not hire an American?

Strange narrator choice

The story was kind of fine but the two things that I found really jarring were the narration and the repetition. I don’t understanding having a British person do an American accent for the whole of the book. A lot of strange pronunciations of words and a lot of slipping accents. Found it quite jarring. I also got frustrated with unnecessary repetition of character information. I get it, Coffey started off in the archives…

Muted narration but okay storyline

The narrator is too calm in most places, like she's talking to a frightened child. And yet, when there's action described she's not animated enough.. tell the God dam story like you've seen it yourself and telling your family like you're proud of your accomplishments.

Not for me

I was hoping for an escapist Bond or Borne type with glamour, panache and intelligence.
The prologue is dreary, blunt politics, like reading 60's propaganda pamphlets. The first chapter reminded me more of a Chippendale performer than a spy. It probably works for others, just didn't capture my imagination.
