Summary
Sorch is an orc mage in a world where orcs are cursed with stupidity every time they cast a spell. The only spell he can safely cast is Enhance Intelligence, which boosts his IQ for a fraction of a second before the curse drains it all away again.
Normally casting such a spell would be pointless, but Sorch's tribe has found a way to benefit. Magic that is cast near a mysterious artefact called the ‘Voodoo Engine’ causes invisible hands to appear, and these hands get work done for his tribe. Sorch is a slave to the Voodoo Engine, casting a single spell over and over again to avoid being beaten by the chief’s warrior caste.
While foraging for food on one fateful night, our hero happens upon two human mages who are in big trouble. He saves their lives, and in return they give him an amulet that will make his life easier. Unbeknownst to the humans, their gift grants Sorch the power to break the cycle of intelligence drain and physical abuse. With the help of his friend and mentor, Shaman, Sorch becomes a real mage.
Sorch leaves his swamp and embarks on a series of incredibly exciting and dangerous adventures. During his travels he encounters horrible injury, magical treasures, love, snow, university admissions tests, a plot against the Kingdom, and then of course he saves the world. Or does he?
Be prepared to rethink everything you know about thinking. If your own intelligence was the fuel that your magic ran on, how brightly would you dare to burn?

A D&D campaign in book form
This was definitely A Dungeons & Dragons campaign translated into a story with all the benefits and negatives that come along with this. The characters are fun to spend time with but the story feels a little segmented like it’s less one big adventure and a lot of smaller ones. And that’s a kind of a disconnect between them unfortunately. The climax was a bit rushed I thought the villains were really one note and paled in comparison with how complex them heroes are.
Overall not bad but not one of my favourites

Orc Mage
That's was so different and yet so good, the story is told from the main protagonist Sorches point of view, Sorch is an orc mage, but orcs have been cursed when it comes to using magic, when they cast spells it makes them even more stupid, When Sorch is out foraging for food, he comes across two human mages being attacked and comes to their rescue and saves their lives, surprised they've been saved by an orc, they present him with an amulet to help him with his magic and makes his life much easier, When the chief of the tribe feels threatened with his new powers, before he is killed, he sets out on a new and exciting new adventure full of danger and to enhance his knowledge and his magic in joining the arcane university, Scorch will make new friendships and see places he never thought he would ever see after living in a swamp, quite enjoyable and very humorous, great characters, fantastic plot and setting, the narration by James Patrick Cronin is just class, highly recommend...😁⚡

I hate too write this!
I love this book.............................. until the trap cat showed up. I don't know why the publisher didn't think to, maybe mention that the love interest was a androgynous, gender non-binary, cat-kin, prostitute, that everybody is attracted to. all I know is I find furry tranny way to degenerate for me. if you feel the same way I do skip this book. If furry stripper scenes, with a possibly male furry, doesn't bother you I hope you enjoy it.

Sigh.... Total Freaking Sigh...
I loved this book literally until the exact 1/2 way point when the freaking trans cat shows up and starts strip teasing the main character which makes literally NO FREAKING SENSE! The entire wear cat / wolf race / furry freaks were included solely for the author to explore their furry fantasy's and their transsexual curiosity and political views. Its total bull-crap that RUINED a perfectly fun and interesting book. The entire story gets derailed by the inclusion of the supposed "love interest" which is actually a questionably male/female (it never gets answered at least at the point where i had to through it down in frustration).
Also, why the freak would the publisher be okay with this being supposedly listed as a YA novel?! Literally prostitution, a graphic strip tease, and potentially gay graphic sex scenes...wtf?!
Its like i was reading a perfectly good book, and then someone decided to write a second book that derailed this one. Bullshit and fuck the author for doing this.

Not My Cup Of Tea
Let me start of by saying that Cronin's narration is amazing as always. The book however, was....mehhh. The first few hours were great. I enjoyed our MC transformation in intelligence and the premise of the orc curse was really unique. At first I was excited that the story would evolve along RPG elements and I was a little dissapointed that it didnt. Then about halfway through the book, the story started to lose my interest. first of all, there was way to much diaologue and intraspection for my taste. Second of all, the androgynous furry love interest was just not my cup of tea. I have nothing against transgenders or same sex relationship in the real world but personally I found the MC's relationship akward and cringworthy and all together distracting from the main story. If you dont mind, or enjoy furry transgender relationships than maybe this book is for you.

1st Person Fantasy with a fun twist
It took a bit to get used to the first person aspect of unenhanced speech, but then it made the novel great. The speech changes with his intelligence, loved it. Made me really feel like I was in his head.

oh wow, how progressive...
so the protagonist is an Orc, cool. Then he makes his love interest a transgender furry cat person.. gross (mostly the furry part, transgenders are whatever, I don't care one way or another). Come on! a furry humanoid with internal sex organs? that's gross, it's not really "transgender" it's just androgynous, yet it's still referred to as "they" even after the protagonist has sex with it, and would I hope know what sex it is. So god damn stupid.

the perfect mix of a realistic problem with fantas
this book shows a realism in understanding neurological problems well being true to a fantasy world it's shows a problem similar to an Alzheimer's patient when it comes to the memory loss while staying true to the fantasy genre it is a shame that the offer didn't go into a litrpg for this book which could have been hanst it even more

Great Narrator, Great Concept, Good Story.
I love James Patrick Cronin- especially his work on the Demon Accords series. He did a great job with this one. The concept of the story was great- almost a coming of age story- with a twist. So I was really excited- and then a bit underwhelmed. Overall worth a credit- and I can see how some would love it and some wouldn't. Give it a listen and decide for yourself.

Lgbt romance
Interesting premise interesting characters but decides for no reason and with no warning that it needs to fire off the virtue cannon. *much like star wars*
My last review was deleted for being honest so there is my soft shoe version.

SJW propaganda incoming
Good story, good performance. the amount of SJW nonsense was overwhelming. I would have stopped at this book, but OCD made me finish the trilogy.
