About this listen

They’re hoping this visit is a return journey—but it might be a one-way ticket to murder.

July 1912. Lady Hardcastle and her tenacious lady’s maid, Florence Armstrong, are enjoying a convivial gathering at the home of their dear friends, the Farley-Strouds. The only fly in the idyllic ointment seems to be the lack of musical entertainment for the forthcoming summer party—until, that is, Lady Hardcastle’s brother Harry calls with news of a murder.

Harry dispatches them to Bristol on behalf of the Secret Service Bureau, with instructions to prevent the local police from uncovering too much about the victim. It seems an intriguing mystery—all the more so when they find a connection between the killer and an impending visit from an Austrian trade delegation, set to feature a very important guest…

Summoned to London to help with some very important security arrangements, the intrepid duo will have to navigate sceptical bureaucrats, Cockney gangsters and shadowy men in distinctive hats in their attempts to foil an explosive—and internationally significant—threat.

Critic reviews

“Longtime series narrator Elizabeth Knowelden's performance brings two occasional government agents to life: Lady Hardcastle, a genteel widow with a less-than-genteel past, and Florence Armstrong, her companion and confidante, who is also a martial arts expert.… Knowelden's Lady Hardcastle is gentility itself—until she's faced with blatant misogyny. Then the quick-witted lady becomes charming steel. Florence gets just the right mix of toughness and savvy, while Knowelden's secondary characters have genuine personalities. Fun listening.” AudioFile Magazine

Another good helping of Lady Hardcastle and Flo

Not the most complex or fastest moving of plots but the sheer joy of listening to the banter between Lady Hardcastle and Flo more than makes up for it.

Brilliant as always!

Long awaited but worth it as always! My favourite author in this genre and hands down my favourite narrator too - such a pairing can’t be beaten and with clever plots, great wit and ongoing character building I will as always, eagerly await the next instalment……

Another brilliant Lady Hardcastle story!

Absolutely brilliant story. I love this series and this latest book has certainly made an impression. The story is slightly different this time, and we see Lady H and Flo in a slightly different set of circumstances to the other books. Anyone who has followed this series will know they're in semi-retirement from an exciting life as spys and we are usually teased with tales of past adventures whilst they solve some mystery. But this time we follow them as they're set to work as spys again.

Romped along

Another ripping yarn of derring do from lady hardcastle and her side kick. No dull moments and lots of laughs along the way. Great characterisation from the narrator too. Throughly enjoyable as an accompaniment to knitting on an autumnal afternoon.

Simply marvellous daahling!

I absolutely love this series and the latest story is no exception. Wonderfully written and brought perfectly to life by the narrator. Her character voices are all identifiable and each is absolutely suited to the characters as written. The giggles and guffaws just keep coming, while the story itself, based clearly in historical fact and potential possibility, is no less serious for the humour, and no less gripping with its amount of appropriate peril.
This is one of Audible’s best double-acts, the perfect bringing together of author and narrator. I hope the author continues to write these wonderful books and the same narrator continues to bring them so wonderfully to life. Thank you both and thank you Audible.
