Summary

The ideal lady wears lace, speaks quietly, and never - under any circumstances - fixes an automobile. But Gwyn Ruthers has never cared two snaps about being the ideal lady. With the war to end all wars exploding across the English Channel, she leaves behind her restrictive life as a chauffer's daughter to serve in an all-female ambulance unit in France. She's not about to let her social status or gender prevent her from serving her country. Not even a handsome captain can distract her from her mission. Most of the time.

Captain William Crawford wouldn't wish the ravages of war on any man, much less the captivating woman who insists on driving into battle instead of staying safely at home. He can't deny that the troops need more medical help but not when it puts innocent women in danger. How can he lead his men against the Jerries while worrying about Gwyn's safety?

Bound together by circumstances, Gwyn and William can't stop the love growing between them. Can their relationship survive, or will it become another casualty of war?

Rather monotone delivery

Sadly this was spoilt for me by the reader. Rather lacking in expression. Great story though!

the usual author did very little with history

Just the unique model of strong women falls in love with old fashion military guy. Had potential but seems to taken the easy way out of writing with exponding on history.

Great story

A light romance with thoughtful insight into elements of WWI, the changing plight of British gentry and the emerging push for greater gender equality. Unfortunately the narration wasn’t great hence the 4 star rating.

I really enjoyed it

I thought the narrator was good, not sure why other reviewers didn’t like her. Good story. Religious references were minimal. Worth listening to, I had trouble pausing it, just wanted to listen straight through.

Narration ruined it...

The narrator was monotone and the entire book was like a giant run on sentence. The story itself seemed good and had my interest so I had to finish it. But it’s not a leisure listen as it takes a lot of focus to understand as the narrator doesn’t have any inflection. The characters can get confusing and muddled if you’re not paying attention. Didn’t think the narrator could get anymore robotic until she voiced Cecilia...

The narrator wasn’t a good reader

She had awkward and incorrect pausing - sometime in the middle of a sentence for no conceivable reason. She also didn’t place the correct emphasis on words so the meaning of the sentence or paragraph was almost entirely lost. I could read better than this by 8th grade.

Certainly enjoyable

I thought it was a good listen. I am not sure the reader's voice was my favorite but it was still easy to listen to.

Depressing

The story was extremely depressing. I don’t read many stories set during war times so my expectations may not have been realistic. I made an effort to finish the book, got all the way to the 24th chapter. I couldn’t bear another page.
The narrator wasn’t great, but adequate.

lovely story

the story was entertaining but the narrator lacked passion or strength and all the characters sounded the same. It was difficult to determine what character she was talking about or to because there was no difference in her voice.

Duty, friendship, love and Romance

Beautifully written love story surrounded by the horrors of the Great War. This story allows us to witness not only the damages of war, but the people who fought, held strong in their convictions of duty, and survival of love. The story starts slowly, then we are thrushed among the horror, the losses, and the men and women of war, with their strong bonds of friendship, love and romance.
