About this listen

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Alphabet Squadron written by Alexander Freed, read by Saskia Maarleveld.

On the verge of victory in a brutal war, five New Republic pilots transform from hunted to hunters in this epic Star Wars adventure.

The Emperor is dead. His final weapon has been destroyed. The imperial army is in disarray. In the aftermath, Yrica Quell is just one of thousands of defectors from her former cause living in a deserters' shantytown—until she is selected to join Alphabet Squadron.

Cobbled together from an eclectic assortment of pilots and starfighters, the five members of Alphabet are tasked by New Republic General Hera Syndulla herself. Like Yrica, each is a talented pilot struggling to find their place in a changing galaxy. Their mission: to track down and destroy the mysterious Shadow Wing, a lethal force of TIE fighters exacting bloody, reckless vengeance in the twilight of their reign.

The newly formed unit embodies the heart and soul of the Rebellion: ragtag, resourceful, scrappy, and emboldened by their most audacious victory in decades. But going from underdog rebels to celebrated heroes isn't as easy as it seems, and their inner demons threaten them as much as their enemies among the stars. The wayward warriors of Alphabet Squad will have to learn to fly together if they want to protect the new era of peace they’ve fought so hard to achieve.

Enjoyable, but by the numbers

The performance and sound design are as with all Star Wars audiobooks, Topnotch.

The disappointment came from the very predictable plot twists and inclusion of persons, entities, and places from the greater canon that were poorly served in describing why they were there, or expanding their own lore. The example will be the very important imperial droid that literally just stands there and does nothing.

As a set up for future stories, it does it’s job.

Great Performance and Story, but it drags.

The Performance from Saskja Maarlevels is fantastic and the characters are easily distinguished. The writing is brilliant and the action, especially towards the end, is exciting and captivating. However the story itself seems to drag somewhat throughout. This doesn’t however make the story itself bad or unenjoyable and listening on was well worth it.

A good standalone story

This is a fantastic set of new characters for us to meet dealing with shades of gray that we don't normally get in a traditional action star wars story. The action set pieces are fantastic and the friction between the alphabet squadron members is palpable and believable. Nothing feels forced. Much has been made of General Sendula being a part of the narrative. If you are a Hera fan, be pre-warned she is a secondary character. The acting work is clear.

Total chaos

In my opinion the contents of this book are a complete chaos. It is general very difficult to follow and just impossible to follow while driving.

Terrible narration

I am sorry but this narrator was terrible.
I mean no disrespect but the change in voice for different characters was minimal.
Tone was always the same throughout no change in emotion for scenes which would no doubt be energetic and adrenaline filled.

I buy the audio books because I drive so much but after listening to this I am unsure if I actually liked the book so I will buy a physical copy of this book and read it over a weekend. Hopefully I will enjoy it.

As a fan of the old X Wing books this was just as good and had really engaging character development

A unique tale

Alphabet Squadron is a great listen, breaking away from some of the norms of the franchise this book delivers a great story on the whole.

There are a few moments that Weill leave you with more questions than answers but in general, I'd definitely recommend this book to any Star Wars fan, new or old
