Summary

Feeling jilted and cross, Agatha follows a fortune-teller's advice and rents a cottage in the pretty village of Fryfam, where she hopes good fortune and true love will come chasing after her for a change. Unfortunately, her romantic notions are soon dispelled by the strange goings-on in the village. What are those strange lights in Agatha's back garden? Who is stealing paintings and pottery? And who murdered the local squire?

Agatha's nose for trouble leads her into a maelstrom of jealousy, blackmail and dangerous liaisons - and a murderer who plans to keep irrepressible Agatha permanently in Fryfam - as a resident corpse!

Usual amusing writing from Beaton

What made the experience of listening to Agatha Raisin and the Fairies of Fryfam the most enjoyable?

I like these books. There are many to choose from and I can download each one as I want them. It is light reading/listening. M C Beaton is not a sensationalist writer. The Agatha Raisin series are 'nice' detective stories with nothing really nasty lurking to frighten the reader. The books are comfortable and very amusing. If you like gritty thrillers then these books are not for you. I like serious and gritty murder mystery books too but Agatha Raisin I like to read in between to lighten up my listening experience.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Agatha Raisin and the Fairies of Fryfam?

I found this book very likeable. They all are but this one particularly so. Agatha is out of her comfort zone and in a unfamiliar village in this book. She sees lights at the end of the garden and small items go missing from the houses where these 'fairy' lights are seen. Not believing in fairies in the least, Agatha sets off to investigate. The story was particularly convoluted for an Agatha book and I didn't guess who it was that was bumping people off. it was very amusing in parts as all Raisin books are. This one features Sir Charles Fraith, one of Agatha's friends, fellow sleuth and occasional lover, more than usual. It was a very entertaining book.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I particularly liked the part in the book where Agatha encourages the wives of the men who go to the local pub every night to ogle the local landlady who has, shall we say, appealing assets for men. Agatha rallies the wives and takes them into the pub and sets about to show the men, to their outrage, that the ladies can have a jolly good night out too. I enjoyed the story a lot.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

In this book there was not a part that moved me as such. Agatha books are more amusing than moving I think, but some of the other Raisin books can have moving scenes in them.

Any additional comments?

M C Beaton Agatha Raisin books are a really good read and lighter than other murder mystery novels. I like them but theirs might not. I like many genres in books and have an eclectic taste in books. My only criticism is they are not long enough. I like a book to be at least 10 hours long but these books are normally around 6 hours. A good length if you don't want to get caught up in a book for hours on end.

Magical Norfolk. Story ok. Perfect narration.

"Fairies of Fryfam" is a light, relaxing murder mystery. Just like in the previous Agatha Raisin books, with the exception of "The Witch of Wyckhadden," the story is somewhat forgettable. But I keep listening because Penelope Keith's reading is nothing short of flawless. Also, I thoroughly enjoy M.C. Beaton's excellent description of the setting and its atmosphere. In this book, it's Norfolk. And I absolutely love Norfolk, however dark, cold, and windy it gets in the autumn and winter.
Overall, a quick, fun listen worth one's time for the jagged and merciless beauty of Norfolk and Penelope Keith's perfect reading.

So much fun

Perhaps 'fun' is not the expected description of a murder story but there's something quite special about the Agatha Raisin books.

Penelope Keith is on form as Agatha and as ever, reads the book superbly, giving life to every character without it feeling like a pantomime.

Another twister

I so enjoyed this book I enjoyed how the characters all come alive in the reading. Not to mention Penelope Keith is a superb narrator. Felt the ending was a bit flat in terms of the colouring the scenes that the writer always manages to impart.
Excellent though I would recommend
