Some good stories, performance was terrible
There was good stories and some I thought how they be considered horror, the narrator i thought was dull and never brought any life to the stories, If I didn't enjoy the stories it's due to the narrator, couldn't get into the stories. Never listen to another story from the same narrator.

excellent collection
Even as a child I never found ghost stories particularly frightening, but more mysterious and (when they're good) atmospheric. This collection perfectly fits the bill. The only drawback is the narrator, who over does it, sounding terrified before anything remotely spooky has happened, leaving him with nowhere to go as the story develops, other than way over the top. In fact, at times he almost sounds like a voice put through a ring-modulator (early Dr. Who.) That being said, this remains a thoroughly enjoyable collection.

Enjoyable
In general, I enjoyed this very much. Some stories, of course, were better than others but most were interesting enough to hold the attention. I loved the old fashioned tone of the vocabulary and idiom; the narration was excellent.

Sure, 'Tis Da Auld Fella Wit' Da Crooked Neck...
Bumper anthology of vintage ghost stories presenting a mix of polished jewels, rough diamonds and cheap paste in this traditional display of the macabre. The percentage of good to bad is high; a strong start lines up half a dozen classics with several other excellent pieces appearing throughout. Even so, this is probably better enjoyed in short sittings as it can get repetitious after a while. Part of the problem is the curation: the formal range is fairly limited here. Many stories feature similar plots or twists (a room bedevilled by a malevolent spirit; people or locales haunted by the tell-tale signs of past sins; a swivel-eyed denouement "And they were a GHOST!"). The problem is exacerbated by the arrangement of the stories, often sequencing two or three in a row that feature much the same premise.
Perhaps unfairly, I found the narration slightly irritating. Simon Stanhope is clearly a capable narrator but his choice of tone really didn't work for me. No doubt attempting to invoke the spectre of Victorian or Edwardian gentility, he delivers these stories in a snooty, querulous tone that lends an air of peevishness to everything. It all sounds a bit Arthur Dent; the tone of a provincial Englishman abroad, complaining to a foreigner about the service of his meal; it's the voice I imagine Americans would expect upon hearing the words: "Ah! Lord Fortesquieu!" Leaning into the melodrama as he does, Stanhope's delivery highlights the stylistic homogeneity to many of these stories. It's a valid approach but not my preferred one. He dials it down occasionally, so that a few pieces (M.R. James' 'Mr Humphreys And His Inheritance,' for instance) are all the more enjoyable as a result.

Wonderful Narration of these Classic Ghost Stories.
I loved every minute of these wonderful ghost stories, I didn’t want it to end.Some well known stories and some lesser known ones.The narration is just perfect and really adds to the enjoyment.

A Selection of Victorian and Edwardian Ghost Stories
Overall, a good selection of stories, highlights including; the phantom Coach, The signalman, The sand walker & Mr Humphries and his inheritance.
As I say, some hit the spot, and some fall short, but overall a good selection.
Simon Stanhope’s narration is adequate.
Recommended.
