About this listen
Win, place, or die.
The apparent heart attack that killed kennel owner Max Turnbull has left seven pups in mourning, and his wife Peg suspecting foul play. But the only evidence is their missing prize pooch - a pedigreed poodle named Beau.
Enter Melanie Travis. With her young son happily ensconced in day damp, the 30-something teacher and single mother is talked into investigating her uncle's death - unofficially, of course. Posing as a poodle breeder in search of the perfect stud, Melanie hounds Connecticut's elite canine competitions and finds an ally in fellow breeder Sam Driver. But her affection cools when she's put on the scent of Sam's questionable past...and hot on the trail of a poodle-hating neighbor and one elusive murderer who isn't ready to come to heel.
For as Melanie soon discovers, in a championship dog-eat-dog world the instinct for survival, and winning, can prove fatal.

Fun, Informative and Entertaining!
This book was a real treat!
I don't think I have absorbed all the information about dog shows, what and how the awards are given, but it has been great fun following the gist of it!
The characters were really great in this book and the narration has to be some of the best I have come across to date! Jessica Almasy switches from Melanie to Aunt Peg with almost no breath in between, with rapid fire conversations between the two characters, and without faltering! I found all of her character voices to be amazing in this book!
The book itself combines family life for a single Mum and her son, that of their wider family of aunts and uncles, whilst also telling a twisty, turny mystery that unravels as you go. It also brings up some interesting facts about poodles! The explanation for their bizarre show coat cuts, originating from practical reason that relate to their use in hunting in Germany, was a real revelation!
Returning to the mystery side, I want to add that I didn't predict the grand reveal, so it was very well devised!
I downloaded this book whilst it was an 'Included' title and may not have done so if it were not. Now I will certainly look at buying any other titles in the series that aren't included of the back of listening to this title.
Excellent book!

Could not finish!
My fault I should have listened to the trailer! The narrators voice gave me a headache (something I am not prone to) however I did manage to listen for 2hrs&5mins before ending the experience. Can not really comment on the story as I was undergoing a perseverance test.
