Summary
A temporary engagement, a lifetime in the making . . .
After years of fending for herself, Kate Taylor found friendship and acceptance in Spindle Cove - but she never stopped yearning for love. The very last place she'd look for it is in the arms of Corporal Thorne. The militia commander is as stone cold as he is brutally handsome. But when mysterious strangers come searching for Kate, Thorne steps forward as her fiancé. He claims to have only Kate's safety in mind. So why is there smoldering passion in his kiss?
Long ago, Samuel Thorne devoted his life to guarding Kate's happiness. He wants what's best for her, and he knows it's not marriage to a man like him. To outlast their temporary engagement, he must keep his hands off her tempting body and lock her warm smiles out of his withered heart. It's the toughest battle of this hardened warrior's life...and the first he seems destined to lose.

Not one for me
The first half of the book was in the usual style for Tessa Dare, and if it had stopped there, I would have rated it around 4.
However, the book went on for too long and suddenly something changed in its style. I found it disturbing. I cannot tell you why, but it did not sit comfortably with me. I had to finish it to see how it ended, but will not read it again. I like a simple light story with a nice happy ending and this one felt all wrong!. I think its a personal thing as others appear to have liked it.

A darker but fascinating story
I loved Samuel and his dreadful but fascinating past. He didn’t let Katie down at any point but tried to do the best thing for her. The new family were interesting and I’d love to hear what happens to them. I’ve listened to all the Spindle Cove books and am now coming back for a second listen.
I love all the very large virile male heroes in this series!

the worst of spindle cove
such a shame. I loved the rest but this was too unremittingly dour. Both hero and heroine bathed in such a quagmire of self recrimination and self worth that this book became painful.

Loved this couple
A continuation of the Spinster Cove series and I think my favourite one so far, although I did love Colin & Minerva's story.
Kate & Thorne are a great couple and their story was very interesting and held my attention throughout. The sudden appearance of the new family holidaying in the Cove could have been jarring to the story but after initial doubts I thought they worked rather well.
I've thoroughly enjoyed this series.

LOVED!
Read/Listened for Fun (Audible/Kindle)
Overall Rating: 4.75
Story Rating: 4.50
Character Rating: 5.00
Audio Rating: 4.50 (Not Part of the overall rating)
First Thought when Finished: A Lady by Midnight by Tessa Dare had all the feels and smiles!
Overall Thoughts: Tessa did it again! I loved Kate and Thorne's love story. I knew these two were destined to be a great match when Kate was a bit more sure of herself on the inside and Thorne appeared very sure of himself on the outside. Thorne stepping up to "pretend" to be Kate's fiance while they figured out if her new found family was legit was fun, interesting, and intriguing. I loved Thorne's back story. I dare you not to swoon after him. I loved Kate's determination to make him see his worth. I loved the ladies of Spindle Cove making sure that this turned out exactly as it should. All around another great entry in the series.
Audio Thoughts:
Narrated By Carolyn Morris / Length: 10 hrs and 51 mins
Carolyn did an outstanding job with Kate and Thorne! These are really good on audio and well worth the time to listen too1
Final Thoughts: Tessa really does knock it out of the park with Kate and Thorne (his first name is Samuel but his last name fits him so well)!

Excellent author / narrator combination
This is a very sweet and satisfying story, ably enhanced by Carolyn Morris' performance. While there is much use of modern language and sensibilities for a Regency, good story writing won my heart.

Great installment of this series!
This story was great, the hero and heroine were fantastic characters, strong, smart, and witty. There was lots of dialogue, great chemistry and nicely written sex.
I read the first 2 books in this series before they were available on audible. I was excited to see them all become available.
The narration was fantastic! Made the story that much better. The narrator did the men's voices great. Everybody had a distinct voice. Good job Carolyn Morris.

Good not great
Storyline kept jumping all over, but it was unique. Cannot say hero heroine whereas interesting as the later character ntrofuced Gramecy family, I hope they get a book as they are as quirky as they come!

Good narrator wasted
Story was so boring I couldn't finish. Not terrible. Just no excitement and romance was lame.

Slow and Weak Story
Not up to the usual Tessa Dare. Most of her books I listen to multiple times. Barely got through this one. Not good development of characters. Both seemed to love the other because of their good looks, although there was an under developed back story. Seemed a lot of repetition and miscellaneous stuff that made the story drag.

Meh
I like most of Tessa Dare’s books but just couldn’t get into this one. Didn’t care for Thorne. He pissed me off over and over and over and over again throughout the ENTIRE book. Stop pushing her away CONSTANTLY and she gives up everything?! For him?!?!? Nah. This story seemed to drag on for me. Kate deserved a better story/man. A Week to be Wicked on the other hand - perfection.

Missing a little bit of umph
This installment of the Spindle Cove series is the weakest so far. I thought the plot was a bit weak and was ready to be done with it to move on to the next one. Still worth a listen to complete the series though, it's just compared to the previous book in the series this one is just good and not great. Still love Tessa Dare!
