Summary

Power, privilege, and the rigid rules of class leave two hearts yearning for connection in the sizzling new Society of Gentlemen novel from K. J. Charles.

Among his eccentric though strictly principled group of friends, Lord Richard Vane is the confidant on whom everyone depends for advice, moral rectitude, and discreet assistance. Yet when Richard has a problem, he turns to his valet, a fixer of unparalleled genius - and the object of Richard's deepest desires. If there is one rule a gentleman must follow, it is never to dally with servants. But when David is close enough to touch, the rules of class collide with the basest sort of animal instinct: overpowering lust.

For David Cyprian, burglary and blackmail are as much in a day's work as bootblacking - anything for the man he's devoted to. But the one thing he wants for himself is the one thing Richard refuses to give: his heart. With the tension between them growing to be unbearable, David's seemingly incorruptible master has left him no choice. Putting his finely honed skills of seduction and manipulation to good use, he will convince Richard to forget all about his well-meaning objections and give in to sweet, sinful temptation.

Critic reviews

"This book is swoon material - grab it!" ( Red Adept Reviews)
"What I enjoyed most about this book was the author's slow and deliberate reveal of the story from both parties' perspectives." ( The Oddness of Moving Things)
"I absolutely loved this book. It was well written, it kept me engaged all the way throughout, and it was so good that I one-clicked the others in the series without even looking at the blurbs. I can safely say that this is one author that I will be reading more of in the future. If you love Regency era-romance and books that really tug on your heart, this is definitely one to check out." Brilliant

Once again KJ has done a wonderful job with her story and characters. I’ve enjoyed all the books in this series, and felt they got better and better with each one. The narration is also outstanding, I think I’m love with those voices.

Servant or master

The roles may seem easy to discern at first but look closer as there may be long standing contradictions.

Excellent read

This is as good as previous books in the series (though I do hope that the prequel will be available at some point as well). There's just one mistake I've noticed this read around, in chapter 13 (chapter 12 of the actual book) around 18 minutes in, where one sentence is repeated twice. It may be a corruption in my file, or a miscoding in the recording, since the inflection is identical, but it's not a big deal.

We'll written and narrated

Brilliant series and excellent plots. Likeable well drawn characters under threat of having their homosexuality exposed and facing gaol or worse.

A brilliant end to this trilogy

The whole series is well written. I love the twists and turns of the plot and the clever manipulation of events. The narrator is spectacular.

Silly Cover, Wonderful Book

This one was probably my favourite of the series, oddly enough A Fashionable Indulgence (Book One) is my least favourite and A Seditious Affair (Book Two) is in second place. I loved David and although lots of people seem not to like Richard I liked him and understood where he was coming from.

The narration by Matthew Lloyd Davies is incredible as always, and the story is excellent. Ignore the weird covers, these books are actually fab

Lord Richard Vane & his valet David Cyprian story.

The third (full) instalment in K. J. Charles's m/m Regency romance series Society of Gentlemen. Centres on Lord Richard Vane and his valet David Cyprian.

From the moment that you start listening to the narrator Matthew Lloyd Davies, the characters and the story come alive from the pages. Transporting you to period London, where if you know the right man for the job...anything is possible!

Brilliant piece of history

It must have been very difficult way back then and for so many years after. well written and narrated and so cleverly concerned .

Did not finish

I think in this case the writing and narration influenced each other to make the story worse. I did not like the cool descriptions of affection. The narrator chose correctly for a 19th century aristocratic English voice, which lacks emotion and personality. I want my romance characters passionate, in stead of polite.
