Summary
A slow-burning romance and a chilling mystery bind two singular men in the suspenseful first book of a new Victorian series from K. J. Charles.
Lodging-house keeper Clem Talleyfer prefers a quiet life. He's happy with his hobbies, his work - and especially with his lodger Rowley Green, who becomes a friend over their long fireside evenings together. If only neat, precise, irresistible Mr. Green were interested in more than friendship....
Rowley just wants to be left alone - at least until he meets Clem, with his odd, charming ways and his glorious eyes. Two quiet men, lodging in the same house, coming to an understanding...it could be perfect. Then the brutally murdered corpse of another lodger is dumped on their doorstep and their peaceful life is shattered. Now Clem and Rowley find themselves caught up in a mystery, threatened on all sides by violent men, with a deadly London fog closing in on them. If they're to see their way through, the pair must learn to share their secrets - and their hearts.

Entertaining
Another good story though perhaps not the best in the series. The narrator is superb.

Sweet book
A slower more thoughtful book in many ways, but I loved it. It’s nice to have more diversity as well, that’s what I love about Charles, the characters are real.

Utterly wonderful
It's always nervewracking when you start an audio of a book you love, but Matthew Davies has done an incredible job and I almost love it more than the written version. Superb. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Fantastic performance, so-so story
I have to say the reading performance is fantastic—Matthew Lloyd Davies changes his speaking style for each character to make each recognisable and performers even the raunchier scenes with impressive gusto. Honestly, his performance just very pleasant to listen to.
The story itself, though, is less impressive. I’m glad I was able to listen to it as included in the membership because I think I would have been very disappointed to have put money (or a credit) into it otherwise. In my opinion, the story is a bit basic. Besides the romance between the two leads, there’s a very basic mystery plot underneath, that’s resolved far too easily and the ultimate culprit is painfully obvious from very beginning. At one point the characters literally go see someone who TELLS THEM the answer to everything through the deus ex machina of omniscient deduction. I mean it, this other character more or less goes, “well my theory is…” and then proceeds to list the exact events that happened. I wish the leads could have worked things out through clues and their own cleverness, rather than having the answers handed to them and all the work done by others. Things get very samey quickly. If the romance keeps you going, it’s not as much of a problem, but I found myself detaching from that as even the relationship seemed to stop developing and devolved into a simple back-and-forth of drama-makeup-drama-makeup. I don’t mean to offend any KJ Charles fans, but I’ve read better.
Overall, I think if you already like this style, you’ll probably like this book. But if you’re at all unsure, I’d listen to it as Included in the membership first if at all possible before deciding if you wanna buy it to keep.

The best of the three
KJ Charles knows how to write about Victorian England and her characters are well-developed. I liked both protagonists in this historical gay fiction and how they were careful not to move to quickly into a relationship. The professions of both mens were original. I never came acros a male lodging-house keeper nor a 'stuffer', before. The narration of this audiobook was marvelous. Because of the narration, this novel is a relisten option for me. I just have to stop myself from grabbing book #2 every time, because this one ends with a bang and I find the next book boring.
