Summary

Eugenie Winford is devastated when her beloved father commits suicide, having lost his fortune in the Wall Street Crash. Now Eugenie and her proud, spoilt mother are ruined. Eugenie changes her name and goes into hiding as a housemaid for the Stannard family - anything is better than what her mother has planned for her. But her real identity is soon revealed, and Jen has to flee again. She ends up in Lambeth, with a poor but good family, and together they face the hardships of the Depression. But, unbeknown to Jen, she is being hunted both by her greedy, manipulative blood family and by the son of the kindly Stannard family.

A Great Title

This is the first book i have listened to from this author and it certainly wont be the last. The sort of book you end up staying in your car long after your journey has finished as you are so engrossed in the storyline.
Beryl Mathews tells a story of a young girls struggle to come to terms with her fathers suicide and her demise from riches to rags. Hardship fustration, sadness, hapiness and romance all bought beautifully to life by the superb narrator Julia Franklin.
