Summary

Book 13 in the internationally best-selling Chronicles of St Mary's series.

For fans of Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club series, Jasper Fforde and Doctor Who.

Finally—finally!—Max has that nice office job she's always wanted. The one with no heavy lifting and no one tries to kill her. Well, one out of two's not bad....

Punching well above their weight, Max and Markham set out to bring down a sinister organisation founded in the future—with a suspicious focus on the past.

Max's focus is staying alive long enough to reunite with Leon and Matthew, alternately helped and hindered by St Mary's—who aren't always the blessing they like to think they are.

But non-stop leaping around the timeline—from witnessing Magna Carta to disturbing a certain young man with a penchant for gunpowder—is beginning to take its toll. Is Max going mad? Or are the ghosts of the past finally catching up with her?

Okish

Skipped some bits where she waffled on about what might possibly happen. As usual everybody's trying to kill her. Getting a bit tired of the same rehash in different clothing. Think this will be the last one of St Mary's I read.

This series never disappoints

I don’t know how Jodi Taylor does it, but every book so is so fresh and alive.

Zara Ramm injects so much more than her voice into these great madcap adventures.

If you have lot listened to this series, I personally think you really have missed out on a gem of a series.

If history was taught like this in school, we would have history geniuses galore.

Fire-truckingly brilliant.

5 stars for the story, 5 stars for the performance and this gives 5 stars overall.

If you haven’t read the previous stories you won’t be disappointed and if you have this is up there with the rest of them.

Thank you Jodi & Zara.

Good but frustrating

Great performance by Zara.
Story not as strong as previous books. Max was unlikeable and unreasonable as a character in places.
Recognise the need to build suspense but there was too much repetition when describing how grave certain situations were going to be in places. This stalled momentum of the story and I actually fast forwarded until it was moving forward again (suppose that’s equivalent to skipping a few pages!).
Character variation was good by moving away from St Mary’s BUT it’s like she dropped her old life / friends / family like a stone with no personal reflection as to what it meant to others. Portrayed Max as very selfish, self centred, immature and sadly leads to the unlikeable comment.
Final point - not enough of one of the most enjoyable elements of previous books - fuller descriptions of the historical events and context in history described in Jodi’s usually colourful and engaging way . Although there was movement between times - I felt the ‘drama and suspense building’ took more page space from the normal descriptions of time / event and context that Jodi does so well.
