Summary
When the luxury cruiser, hastily renamed Great Britain, berths in Kinloch harbour, the pressure is on DCI Jim Daley. The UK Government are taking a high-powered group of businessmen and women on a tour of the British isles, golfing and seeing the sights, as part of a push for global trade. But when one of the crew goes missing, and an elderly local ornithologist disappears, will the pressure become too great?
The arrival of a face from the past sends Daley’s world into a tailspin. And the lives of the passengers and crew of SS Great Britain, as well as the country’s economic future are in jeopardy. DS Brian Scott comes to the fore, and replete with a temporary promotion, is once more - most reluctantly, in his case - back at sea.
Daley faces a life and death struggle, but is this his last throw of the dice?

Brilliant
Its difficult to review without spoiling for others. So simply put, if you love this series this book won't disappoint. All our favourite characters with a brilliant twisting plot, along with the usual light relief from Brian (although Ella Scott is my new favourite) wrapped up in the perfect narration we have come to expect from David..

Simply superb (as always)
A Breath on Dying Embers is another superb offering in the D.I. Daley series, this story centres around a ship full of wealthy business people and dignitaries being wined & dined by the government looking for trade partners. Jim Daley’s health issues bring Brian Scott centre stage with a temporary promotion and an undercover assignment onboard ship (and we know how much he loves a boat!).
I’ve listened to this whole series from the beginning and have grown to love these characters. Denzil Meyrick writes with great warmth and humour and David Monteath is the perfect narrator - a match made in heaven, so much so I hear his voice in my head when I read the synopsis!

Another excellent book
However as others have said I wish they wouldn’t glamourise thuggish behaviour by the police and it be hushed up. Love the characters in this book. The humour in this book was first class. The narration was top notch as always.

Wow!
The wait was well worth it! Twists and turns all the way through - I didn't guess who the 'baddie' was. David Monteath's narration is terrific - I get the book as well as the audio version, but love the audio best, hearing Brian's rants about things, and he and Ella in this book are terrific. No spoilers, but my first reaction when the book ended was 'nooo'. Shock. Dare I ask if there's another book?

naval personnel unconvincing ...the female characters made out to be rather pathetic ....unexciting

Great book, but worrying in parts
The whole of this series are wonderful stories, well performed and I would recommend them to anyone who likes this genre.
However, I really dislike certain aspects of the books.
Firstly that the English Upper Classes are always portrayed as a stereo type of arogant and obnoxious individuals. Im sure that some are, however its a little hackneyed and prejadiced to my mind and it gets boring. As soon as you hear a posh English voice in the Audio book you know this character will be an (expletive of choice),
More worryingly, I really dislike the parts of the story where Daley assults people who anger him and then always gets away with it. and shows no remorse. I would like the character significantly better if he gained his revenge in a more subtle manner within the law. Violance is not an acceptable answer to any problem and the fact that Daleys police colleagues seem to find GBH an acceptable action by a fellow officer is astounding and disturbing.
I would really like Daley to take some resonsiblity fo the anger management issues he struggles with and acknowledges that his assults make him no better than the criminals he chases. Either that or put him in prison where he belongs to serve a sentance for the crimes he has committed throughtout the whole of his career.
