Was fortunate to have been admitted to Portland‘s Benson High School a technical trade school and got involved with KBPS radio, the school district radio station. Broadcasting was fun and exciting and stayed with it full time until the age of 26. Joined my father who was a distributor for Safeguard Business Systems. A national company that worked similar to a franchise. We would provide manual bookkeeping systems along with the training to small businesses. If you are familiar with the checks that have the black carbon strip on the back, chances are that was a Safeguard Check. We dealt with all kinds of businesses. Attorney’s, dentists, hair salons, small construction company’s, etc. One of my own customers, although I never did visit the ranch were the Rajneesh’s in Antelope, Oregon. My biggest customer for about two years. Everything they ordered would be ordered and flown into their warehouse in NW Portland. (They had 6 major corporations, including a travel agency, medical practice, travel agency, all their checking accounts were through the Bank of Greece). Learned a lot about dealing with businesses and there owners. In 1998 I got they idea you should be able to order checks over the internet so I founded ExpressChecks.com and ExpressTaxForms.com (in 1999) built them online from 0 (zero customers) to a national presence serving 35,000+ (7000 Active) small businesses nationwide.
