Nigel Lithman QC has spent his professional life in the criminal courts, first as Barrister from where he was appointed Queen's Counsel, before going to the Bench and sitting as a Criminal Judge. He was appointed a Governing Bencher of the Inner Temple in 2009. Nigel practised as a QC primarily at the Old Bailey and also in Essex. He is well known among his peers as a fearless and outspoken advocate, fair-minded judge and funny man. As a renowned barrister, his work at the Bar included over 100 murder trials, targeted assassinations, salt poisoning, and Britain’s largest Ponzi fraudster. From 2017, he sat as a Crown Court Judge in Luton and St Albans judging mostly drug related gang trials. Nigel has taken the opportunity to speak openly about issues in the criminal justice system. His forthright attitude is exemplified by the fact that whilst Chairman of the Criminal Bar Association in 2014, Nigel led the Bar out on strike for the first time in its' 400-year history. The result was an embarrassing climb down by the Ministry of Justice. Nigel observes that “Since the strike, the MOJ seems to have learned nothing; it has lurched from one crisis to the next without dealing with the problems that led to the strike in the first place.” He lives in north London with his wife and any combination of three young men who choose to live with them.
