Let's be honest. Magid Magid's story seems an unlikely one. He's a Somali-born Black Muslim refugee who became the youngest ever lord mayor of Sheffield and one of the last UK MEPs. Magid has made headlines nationally and internationally for his creative ways of campaigning while not conforming to tradition and being unapologetically himself. Magid had no idea that the poster he dreamed up for a local music festival in 2018 would go viral.

In this inspiring and incisive offering, Barry Magid uses the language of modern psychology and psychotherapy to illuminate one of Buddhism's most powerful and often mysterious technologies: the Zen koan. What's more, Magid also uses the koans to expand upon the insights of psychology (especially self-psychology and relational psychotherapy) and open for the listener new perspectives on the functioning of the human mind and heart.

Magid, born in Somalia, came to Britain as a refugee in 1994. He grew up in Sheffield and completed a travelling gap year before studying at the University of Hull, where his foray into politics began, being elected as Students Union president. Entering the world of work, Magid was elected as a Green Party councillor on Sheffield City Council in 2016, and from 2018-2019 he served as lord mayor. 

Michael Magid: It’s Not What it Looks Like is a a mix of self deprecating “misunderstandings” and biographical accounts of an upbringing in a mixed cultured environment. Magid discusses never really accepting an identity, eventually coming to grips that being mixed (and feeling out of place) is okay.
