The Salpêtrière asylum, 1885. All of Paris is in thrall to Doctor Charcot and his displays of hypnotism on women who have been deemed mad or hysterical, outcasts from society. But the truth is much more complicated - for these women are often simply inconvenient, unwanted wives or strong-willed daughters. Once a year, a grand ball is held at the hospital. For the Parisian elite, the Mad Women's Ball is the highlight of the social season; for the women themselves, it is a rare moment of hope.

Durante una noche, la flor y nata de París disfruta al ritmo de valses y polcas en compañía de las internas, disfrazadas con extravagantes atuendos. Entre las pacientes destacan Louise, una joven epiléptica maltratada por su tío que tiene puestas todas sus ilusiones en un futuro matrimonio con un interno del centro....

Une prophétie. Une île du Finistère Nord. Les visions d'un adolescent fragile. Et, au-delà de tout, jusqu'à la folie, le désir de croire en l'invisible. Sœur Anne, religieuse chez les Filles de la Charité, reçoit d'une de ses condisciples une prophétie : la Vierge va lui apparaître en Bretagne. Envoyée en mission sur une île du Finistère Nord balayée par les vents, elle y apprend qu'un adolescent prétend avoir eu une vision.

Eén avond per jaar lijkt deze vraag irrelevant, als de Parijse elite danst met de gek verklaarde vrouwen. Het bal der gekken is voor zowel de elite als de verbannen vrouwen het hoogtepunt van het jaar en voor de laatsten een zeldzaam moment van hoop.
