• Should Leaders Buy Into Social Issues? Dodging the landmines
    Jul 2 2024

Episode #305 // Over the last decade, there’s been a creeping trend for CEOs to weigh in on social issues, making their private stance very public.

This has now almost become an expectation of high-profile corporate leadership roles. But when CEOs air their personal views on social issues, it also anchors their company, brand, and every stakeholder associated with it, to that position.

Some of these are laudable, timely, commercially effective, and entirely consistent with the brand. Others range from the mildly inappropriate to the quantifiably disastrous.

When putting this episode together, I realized that even I’m a little conflicted on what the right approach might be in different situations. My intent is to take you on a journey through some of the complexities that leaders face when they choose to weigh in on social issues.

I start with a foundational concept — when a leader buys into a social issue, they buy in on behalf of all their stakeholders. I talk about the fact that not all issues are equal and, because motivation is such a critical ingredient, why not all motivations are equal.

I also promise that, if you stay to the end of this slightly longer episode, I’ll tell you a couple of great stories — stories of both stunning success and abject failure in the quest to tie the fate of a company to a stand on a hot-button social issue.

  • Moment #75: My Failproof Formula For Speaking Confidently
    Jun 30 2024

Moment #75 // Many people rate public speaking as one of their top fears. And even though they may learn to push through and suck it up, it’s only a rare few who actually manage to reach the point of mastery, where they completely transcend their fear.

In my experience, the primary skill you need to develop is not public speaking - it’s your ability to think on your feet.

In this Moment, I give you my fail proof exercise to build your confidence and competence in presenting – whether it’s just your own direct reports, or an audience of thousands.

If you want to take a deeper dive into how you can completely conquer your fear of presenting in public, have a listen to Ep.124 Overcoming Stage Fright.

  • Hard Work Can’t Outpace Bad Strategy: Q&A with Marty and Em
    Jun 25 2024

Episode #304 // There are many things that can go wrong between when we utter the words, “Let’s develop our corporate strategy” and the words, “How did we perform last year?

I get a lot of questions about the strategy process, and one thing has become really obvious to me — very few people realize how many moving parts there are… not just in developing a sound strategy, but also in setting up the environment for successful execution of that strategy.

One of the biggest problems with strategy is that we tend to see it as a process — an annual ritual to be conducted, rather than a culture and mindset that requires senior leadership focus, 24 x 7 x 365.

Without this continuing focus, leadership teams can easily fall into the more obvious traps for young players… like investing to grow a product that doesn’t earn sufficient returns to cover its cost of capital.

But there are many more potential problems that conspire to derail your strategy well after the board has signed off on it. Problems like:

    • Not using a zero base to develop your work program;
    • Not truly understanding the drivers that deliver the greatest value; and
    • Allowing people to simply continue the activity that they’re most comfortable with.

In this episode, I explain why — as important as it is to understand — the theory of strategy is necessary, but not sufficient. As a bonus, I also reveal a new concept that I haven’t spoken about before: the productivity v efficiency multiplier!

  • Navigating Wicked Problems: Compartmentalization is key
    Jun 18 2024

Episode #303 // We know that problem solving is a critical part of leadership life — we spend a lot of time on any given day solving our own problems, and helping our people to solve theirs.

As you’ve no doubt learned, though, there are problems and there are… problems. It’s important to know how to leverage good problem solving techniques. But it’s equally important to manage your head space so that your biggest leadership problems don’t take over your whole life.

Wicked problems don’t come along every day but, when they do, they can totally dominate your emotional and psychological reactions to virtually everything.

Being able to compartmentalize will help you to keep things in perspective. You can’t let your biggest leadership problems consume you to the point where they detract from your ability to function properly, and enjoy the other aspects of your life.

In this episode, I explore the concept of wicked problems. I give a detailed example of the most wicked problem I faced as a CEO, and I finish with an extensive range of advice for compartmentalizing, so that you can cope with whatever problems come your way.

    Jun 16 2024

Moment #73 // I talk a lot about high performance. But what about the people who find themselves doing relatively mundane, repetitive, or low-skilled jobs?

We tend to imagine occupations like cleaners, fruit pickers, and production line workers when we think about mundane jobs. But many people in your team could also be doing some mind-numbing work, to fulfill the less-glamorous requirements of their role.

In this Moment, I give you my six hot tips for leading people to do the sh!t jobs.

  • 7 Big Culture Killers: Don’t let mediocrity destroy performance
    Jun 11 2024

Episode #302 // One of our dedicated listeners, Jonathan, observed that a number of culture killers can be described by words that end with the suffix, “-ism”. He rattled off a couple to get me started — nepotism, narcissism, and favoritism.

He suggested that I should create a podcast episode based on these, and other “-isms” that negatively impact team culture and productivity, so I’ve come up with my list of seven big culture killers.

This episode’s pretty straightforward — I explain each term, and the nuances of the impact it has on team culture, which is antithetical to high performance.

Any conscious effort you put into creating a constructive, high-performance culture will be silently undermined by these seven deadly sins. This can leave you feeling frustrated, wondering why your best efforts aren’t getting any traction.

But it’s incredibly easy to turn a blind eye to these culture killers, especially if they were existing cultural norms when you took over the team in the first place.

  • Moment #72: Leading In Organization-Induced Chaos
    Jun 9 2024

Moment #72 // It is common in most larger organizations to restructure from time to time, even though these restructures are often ill-conceived. Any value they might yield is dwarfed by the disruption, cost, and uncertainty they create.

Regardless, you may well be in a position where you have to execute on management intent, which means telling a bunch of people that their roles have been made redundant. In this Moment, I give you my 9 top tips for getting this right.
