Summary

In the bleak, not-too-distant future, most people who could fled to the virtual reality OVR World Online.

Zachary "Zee" Jones will never be able to afford to become a player of the game. After committing a crime in order to save his mother's life, he was arrested and included in the Inmate Player Program. Even without perception filters to limit his pain, it was better than the alternative. He has the opportunity to earn more money in a five-year sentence then he could have in his entire life as a hospital janitor.

Zee is jacked into Gygax, a high fantasy adventure game world, filled with knights, magic, and monsters. But Zee quickly learns that just because the world is virtual doesn't mean the danger isn't real. Can he find his fortune, perhaps a few allies, avoid the dangers of adventuring as an inmate, and unravel the mystery behind the game's confounding sentient computer program wearing a familiar face called "the doctor"?

Enjoyable throughout except for one thing

As said in the title, it was a great listen and has me hooked on what's to come next. The problem however, is the MC's stat read outs: it takes a few minutes by the end of the book and I found it hard to believe all of that was left in without being cut down significantly. Still, it's not like it's hard to skip, so it's just a small problem imo.

It was perfectly okay/decent.

I found the story pretty average. The mechanics of this “game” similar between SAO and Ready Player One.

Preforms wise I think it could have been better with voices and excitement in between chapters, think it would have made the story more captivating.

I found the stat-tracking every time he leveled up a bit annoying to listen to because it went on for sooo long. Think in the book it was pretty easy to skim through but hearing the entire stat-track was annoying. Think summarizing the upgrades to the stats would have been a better call.

Character development was pretty disappointing because it didn’t truly feel like they grew any closer, maybe that comes in book 2 but think they should have touched a bit more on it in this book. Doesn’t really feel like you get to know any of the characters other than the MC. The other characters you just summarize to their stereotypical traits, made the book less enjoyable.

Action sequences were pretty okay but as said before the performance could have been better, with maybe a bit more vigor and urgency in the readers voice.

Wouldn’t have minded some music or sound effects for the book but that does sound a lot to ask (not being sarcastic).

It was a decent book with a okay story and performance overall a 3 star for me.
Probably gonna listen to the 2nd book.

Perfect! Except...

I loved every second of this, except the narrator says exp instead of xp. Personal preference though, i guess! On to book 2 of OVR World Online.

Excellent Book...Excellent Narration

Surprisingly found a little gem in this book. If you like The First Defier this will be right up your street.

Looking forward to follow up books.

Ready Player Deja Vu?

Firstly, I would like to say i got this free as inclusive with my audible account. Is it enjoyable? Yes. Is it well performed? Yes, good naration. Is it original? Nope! A dystopian future where democracy is broken and the law and all aspects of society is governed by large corporations, those that break the law can be sentenced to a virtual reality game to pay off their debt, sound familiar?
As pointed out in other reviews it is quite similar to "Ready Player One" in all those aspects, except that the story doesnt end with this one book, so a series?
I suppose it was inevitable that this would happen with this genre eventualy.
When the next book in the series is available I would probably follow it just to see how it turns out.

Good for how bad it is

I am torn.
The book is not that good but it got me hooked.
First of all I can understand the comparison to Ready Player One.
That one is much better, especially since it is not litRPG. I cannot really stand this genera.
BUT this is not JUST a ripoff. It does add some original and interesting ideas that do get you inteested.
It is not just about the lame game world. Just as RPO it is also about the world that has gone down the drain.
Without wanting to spoil anything I can say that it gets more interesting near the end.
And another good thing is that it has less litRPG silliness than other books i came across. Nobody yells out attack or spell names here at lease.
It also has humor and far less references than RPO.

What i really hated were the 4-5 times or more where the entire character sheet of the main character got read. Fully. With all the increasing titles and achievements and all his stats. I get it, he grows and gets stronger but i really would have liked another way of doing it.

I will check out the next one but also at 1.5x

Very dull narrator and an boring stock LITRPG wrld

The non-videogame world actually seems more interesting, with the megacorps and all of the history. Instead, we're given a boring story with a narrator who doesn't seem like he wants to be there.

Okay

I have a few issues with this book and the biggest one is the lack of experience the MC gets from defeating higher levelled guys. He beat 2 level 30s at level 5 and he didn't even level up...like are you mad what kind of bs is that....got me too vexed to even carry on to the next book. Fix it. MC should be min level 12 at least that's not on

Great listening

I finally found a series in this genre without a harem (so far) and bedroom encounters are delicacy handled. So the story has to rely on plot and characters. I am really keen to start the next book!

Only 1 minor gripe- in the printed book character stats would be there in a table and you would glance at it and move on. In the reading, the stats have all the appeal of reading an excel spreadsheet one row at a time, cell by cell, all the headings then the numbers below. It goes on for over 2 minutes each time. Skip skip skip skip skip skip backskip, continue

That doesn’t in the least put me off buying the next one though
