Summary

In the bleak, not-too-distant future, most people who could fled to the virtual reality OVR World Online.

Zachary "Zee" Jones will never be able to afford to become a player of the game. After committing a crime in order to save his mother's life, he was arrested and included in the Inmate Player Program. Even without perception filters to limit his pain, it was better than the alternative. He has the opportunity to earn more money in a five-year sentence then he could have in his entire life as a hospital janitor.

Zee is jacked into Gygax, a high fantasy adventure game world, filled with knights, magic, and monsters. But Zee quickly learns that just because the world is virtual doesn't mean the danger isn't real. Can he find his fortune, perhaps a few allies, avoid the dangers of adventuring as an inmate, and unravel the mystery behind the game's confounding sentient computer program wearing a familiar face called "the doctor"?

Enjoyable throughout except for one thing

As said in the title, it was a great listen and has me hooked on what's to come next. The problem however, is the MC's stat read outs: it takes a few minutes by the end of the book and I found it hard to believe all of that was left in without being cut down significantly. Still, it's not like it's hard to skip, so it's just a small problem imo.

Excellent Book...Excellent Narration

Surprisingly found a little gem in this book. If you like The First Defier this will be right up your street.

Looking forward to follow up books.

Great listening

I finally found a series in this genre without a harem (so far) and bedroom encounters are delicacy handled. So the story has to rely on plot and characters. I am really keen to start the next book!

Only 1 minor gripe- in the printed book character stats would be there in a table and you would glance at it and move on. In the reading, the stats have all the appeal of reading an excel spreadsheet one row at a time, cell by cell, all the headings then the numbers below. It goes on for over 2 minutes each time. Skip skip skip skip skip skip backskip, continue

That doesn’t in the least put me off buying the next one though

Great and exciting story

A lot like ready player one (the movie) but better
the single drawback is the character sheet which becomes too long and boring, the weapon stats three confusing numbers which i must have missed the meaning of

Alright!

The best thing about any book is having a main character you can cheer on. This book had that and I was pulled in. The story was great, especially the references, and the narration was spot on. I look forward to the next.

Ready Player Deja Vu?

Firstly, I would like to say i got this free as inclusive with my audible account. Is it enjoyable? Yes. Is it well performed? Yes, good naration. Is it original? Nope! A dystopian future where democracy is broken and the law and all aspects of society is governed by large corporations, those that break the law can be sentenced to a virtual reality game to pay off their debt, sound familiar?
As pointed out in other reviews it is quite similar to "Ready Player One" in all those aspects, except that the story doesnt end with this one book, so a series?
I suppose it was inevitable that this would happen with this genre eventualy.
When the next book in the series is available I would probably follow it just to see how it turns out.

Ready, First Player Knock Off

Another wannabe author attempting to copy a successful author and movie by taking the main premise and most plot devices and changing enough not to be sure for plagiarism...

On top of that moronic MC being lead around like a child.

The story was good and interesting until the MC is in the game. After that the story is a knock off of Ready, First Player only with names changed and being in a virtual prison... which is poorly regulated and world built... lazy author.

Too many little things are poorly done.

The motivations of everyone except the main character make no sense. The economics of the world are insane. The game mechanics wouldn't work. The story isn't entirely awful but it is pretty bad.

awesome starting story

I'm only going to talk about the starting part of the story. I love the fact that it takes nostalgic TV references on every aspect of his life for the main character. it allows the story to draw in the reader or listener. looking forward to the rest

A decent listen!

I really enjoyed the book, but I wish the author could describe a woman without creepy sexualized comments.
