Summary

With this book Immanuel Velikovsky first presented the revolutionary results of his 10-year-long interdisciplinary research to the public, founded modern catastrophism - based on eyewitness reports by our ancestors-shook the doctrine of uniformity of geology as well as Darwin's theory of evolution, put our view of the history of our solar system, of the Earth and of humanity on a completely new basis - and caused an uproar that is still going on today.

Worlds in Collision - written in a brilliant, easily understandable, and entertaining style and full to the brim with precise information-can be considered one of the most important and most challenging books in the history of science. Not without reason was this book found open on Einstein's desk after his death. For all those who have ever wondered about the evolution of the earth, the history of mankind, traditions, religions, mythology or just the world as it is today, Worlds in Collision is an absolute must-listen!

well worth considering

it becomes obvious early on that velikovsky was an excellent writer which is even more impressive when you consider that english wasn't his mother tongue. If you're interested in the tales of catastrophic events in distant antiquity, velikovsky is the best place to start, even in 2021.

How does a Belarusian psychiatrist begin an investigation into ancient mythology, and end up correctly predicting that Venus will be an extremely hot planet, and will emit radio waves? The scientific community in the 50's went insane trying to dismiss that very important question, and it still needs to be answered in my opinion. obviously modern science has a few plot holes when it come to explaining human history. Theres 2 choices: ancient humans were dumb and silly, and have nothing to teach us. Or ancient humans were pretty much exactly like us, and did have something to teach us.

if you agree with the 2nd proposition, velikovsky was doing exactly what he should have done to uncover whatever lessons might be there to find. And he was slandered for it...smh Ignore whatever you might have heard about Velikovsky both good and bad, and make up your own mind. That's what I did and I think Worlds in Collision was an excellent book, he takes ancient mythology seriously but not literally, and has the sharp mind of a trained accademic before the sickness of postmodernism took hold in the universities.

Definitely recommended to anyone with a mind open enough to entertain heretical notions.

Our REAL history & cosmology.

Every prediction Velikovsky made was confirmed & others will also eventually be confirmed.
The narrator could be better, someone like David Talbott or Wallace Thornhill, who've continued Velikovsky's work to this day, would have made this a-book much better.

Thought provoking but in places flawed

Appreciated the argument that the Chronicles of the ancients across different civilisations provided a compelling argument for actual events that run counter to some current cosmological views. Also appreciated that it was disingenious to think that these peoples could have mistaken a year for 360 days as they would have seen the seasons and sun markers cycle back through their 360 day year. Anyone who uses a lunar calendar, even for religious observences, knows this.
However the conflation of the pre-Islamic Arab's beliefs in Lat and Uzza (and their planetary associations) with Islam was an embarrassing glaring error which could shake confidence of a reader in the rest of the book (which would be unfortunate).
Towards the end of the book the author expresses a view of the Isrealites developing from Polytheism to Monotheism and could have considered, or clarified whether this was part of a longer cycle, namely an ancient monotheism, that descended into polytheism, and then returned to Monotheism.

Whether you agree with the book wholly, in parts, or totally disagree with it, it is worth a listen to them have an informed view.

well, it kinda makes sense

I've taken 2 geology classes in college and I remember, multiple times thinking to myself that the explanation i was reading didn't make much sense. In this book, an alternative is given for much of geology, history, religion, and astrology. The author's thesis makes a lot of sense but we must always remember that not understanding something and receiving an explanation that we can wrap our heads around doesn't always make it right. That's why the big conspiracy theories exist. Does this book constitute as a conspiracy theory? I would say it falls under alternative history. I have a degree in history and I appreciate this book a lot because what we think we know about the past is limited to where we stand now and the sciences and religions of the world are not perfect and complete, but tailored for us, where we are now in time, when the solar system seems static and the stories of ancient people seem like fabrications. We don't really know what happened and basing our understanding on how things look now doesn't seem to be working.

Extraordinary academic accomplishment.

Mr. Stewart, the narrator, is the best. Author Emanuel Velakovsky is extremely thorough in his historical research. He seems to have no agenda or bias to put forth. I now understand better why this book was so vilified by the "establishment" back in 1955. It paints a bleak picture.

Worth the listen!

Mind blown! Velikovsky draws you into a new timeline that our religious and world leaders have tried to hide. Open minded people will be taken on a magic carpet ride….

Velikovsky is a True Intellectual

If anyone wants to know what the mind of a true intellectual looks like, they need to read this book. While I do not necessarily agree with everything he says, it is refreshing to see an alternative view based on actual research of ancient records and peoples. This is the kind of creative thought missing from modern day academics. Just an amazing book!

Every student should be required to read this book

This man could write almost as well as he could research. Finding him, even 70 years too late has answered questions I didn't know I had!

Well Worth considering climate changes causes.

Mind opening and thought provoking, something to seriously consider in our understanding of climate change and our place in existence.

Eye opening scientific analysis

This author presents scientific and historical evidence for the unsettling near miss of Mars orbit bringing it within 77,000 miles of Earth in 701 BC and on other occasions.

fascinating ...but dated in places

this guy did truly exhaustive research for this... very impressive.
it's easy though to zone out on all of the details.

I am not knowledgeable enough about this subject to say that he convinced me, but he does make a compelling argument.

it was published in 1950...some of his details are no longer valid but if you are familiar with the work of Wallace Thornhill, you know that many of the authors theories have been proven as well... so... the jury is still...in my opinion
