Summary

That night, visions mocked Vol’jin. He found himself in the midst of fighters, each of whom he recognized. He’d gathered them for that final assault on Zalazane, to end his madness and free the Echo Isles for the Darkspears. Each of the combatants took on aspects of a jihui cube, faced to be at their maximum power. Not a fireship among them, but this did not surprise Vol’jin.

He was the fireship, but not yet turned to display his maximum power. This was not a fight, though desperate, in which he would destroy himself. Aided by Bwonsamdi, they would slay Zalazane and reclaim the Echo Isles.

Who be you, this troll, who be having memories of a heroic effort?

Vol’jin turned, hearing the click of a cube snapping to a new facing. He felt trapped inside that cube, translucent though it was, and shocked that it had no values on any face. “I be Vol’jin.”

Bwonsamdi materialized in a gray world of swirling mists. “And who be this Vol’jin?”

The question shook him. The Vol’jin of the vision had been the leader of the Darkspears, but was no longer. Reports of his death would just now be reaching the Horde. Perhaps they had not yet gotten there. In his heart, Vol’jin hoped his allies had been delayed, just so Garrosh could dwell one more day wondering if his plan had succeeded.

That did not answer the question. He was no longer the leader of the Darkspears, not in any real sense. They might still acknowledge him, but he could give them no orders. They would resist Garrosh and any Horde attempt to conquer them, but in his absence, they might listen to envoys who offered them protection. They could be lost to him.

Who do I be?

Vol’jin shivered. Though he thought himself superior to Tyrathan Khort, at least the man was mobile and not wearing sick-robes. The man hadn’t been betrayed by a rival and assassinated. The man had clearly embraced some of the pandaren way.

And yet, Tyrathan hesitated when he should not have. Some of it was a game to make the pandaren underestimate him, but Vol’jin had seen through that. The other bits, though, as he’d hesitated after Vol’jin complimented a move, those were genuine. And not something a man be allowing in himself.

Vol’jin looked up at Bwonsamdi. “I be Vol’jin. I know who I was. Who I gonna be? That answer only Vol’jin could be finding. And for now, Bwonsamdi, that be enough.”

better than I expected

I'll keep it short cause I'm at work

it made me think about many things in many different ways.

Also made me return to the game after being 100% set against ever returning.

Pandas talking about feelings

Narrator was good, made an effort. I like trolls and orcs and humans are a necessary part to any warcraft story but too much panda drama, we get it you are peaceful and make beer but get out the way and let the shadow hunter slay peoples. There are better warcraft books out there, I like the orc ones and the dragon ones, even dwarf ones are better than pandas.

Nice

Great individual voice impersonation. Very well written characters development, although I expected more than just a sudden death for Khalak.

Terribly Boring

What did you like about this audiobook?

What is there to like?

How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?

No, actually detracted from my interest in World of Warcraft Books

Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?

No

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

The narration was fine, I've listened to Scott Brick in many other books and found his naration to be good quality, however when the content is this dreary there isn't a great deal he can do with it.

Do you have any additional comments?

After listening to several audio books I decided to give a World of Warcraft audio book a go, as a long time player of the game I’ve heard lots of good things about the books and this was my first foray into them and I must say it has left a bitter taste, I got to chapter 10 and decided I had had enough. I found the content slow and waffling and using a lot of words but not achieving much with them. I certainly will be steering clear of any further World of Warcraft books and will stick to more interesting literature.

Scott brick, WOW

It’s a real shame they haven’t used him for the rest of the Warcraft audiobooks, he simply brings them to life with his brilliant vocal performance. Fantastic story enriched by a great narrator.

best story of vol'jin

i found the story gripped me from the start i didnt want to stop listening to it with the twists and turns and the sheer elaboration of everything made my mind wonder into pandaria itself and getting to know the back story to Vol'jin and Chen Stormstout and how they met before the story or pandaria came into wow

A great story with interesting characters

I really enjoyed this WoW novel, it was full of tense action and charming conversation. My only issue was, in my opinion, that the narrator was a bit low energy.

It wasn't a huge issue but sometimes I would zone out and start thinking about something else... and it's a bad sign that an audiobook can't keep your attention when you're on a treadmill, staring at a wall! I'd be completely lost at times. Maybe that's more my fault but his voice is definitely... too dramatic and slow.

I'd still recommend this book for any fantasy or Warcraft fans.

Awsome book

Top notch story,I play alliance and have no love for the horde, So I thought I'd give it a go as I've listened to all the other warcraft books. To my surprise it was one of the best books I've listened too. It had me engrossed from start to finish, with top notch narration from Scott brick as always. A must read/listen for all warcraft fans (even if your alliance :p) just stay away from the stormrage piece of **** book

Horribly boring

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Anyone who HAS to know what happened to Vol'jin before becoming Warchief will want to pick it up

What was most disappointing about Michael A. Stackpole’s story?

This book was aweful. I LOVE the warcraft books, and am a huge fan of the games, in general, but this book put me to sleep so many times. The narrator has the most monotone, dreary approach to reading the novel, that you just can't help but think that it might have been, at least, somewhat better if you had just read the hard cover book and not the audio book.

NOTHING happens in this book. It's the most uneventful waste of time i've ever experienced. The writing is not engaging, and for 95% of the book, not a damn thing happens. It's just talking. Useless talking. Vol'jin at least does some things towards the end, but it's not even exciting. A huge yawn.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Scott Brick?

I have no idea. Someone who could raise their voice to represent fear, or dread, or excitement? Someone with some emotion.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

There are no redeeming qualities of this book. It's beyond boring.

Any additional comments?

I hope they don't do another book that even closely resembles having ANYTHING to do with Vol'jin and/or Taran Zhu.

Vol’jin deserved better

This book is amazing and exemplifies how wasted Vol’jin was to make room for an edgier character that was brought to the forefront just for her popularity.

I encourage everyone to read this book and enjoy a time when Blizzard cared about their story.

Started out great.

For as great as the first 21 chapters were I can’t believe how repetitive and boring the last third of the book was. Disappointing.

Very Enjoyable and Unique WoW Book

I found this book very enjoyable to listen to, though it is distinctly different from other WoW books I've listened to with a narration that fits well with the tone of the book.

The writing of this book is much more focused on thoughts and philosophies than descriptions and details as is the case for many other writing styles. In general, things are only described if they give you a sense of what someone believes or understands about them. You don't get imagery for the sake of imagery, only for the construction of your understanding about something or what someone thought about someone or something.

At first that made me think the book would be bland, as many things were not described in the great detail I'm used to and enjoy, but as the book goes on you begin to understand what the imagery provided does for your understanding of situations, and I personally found that satisfying. You do end up getting some more thorough descriptions as the book goes on, so don't fear that the book is devoid of imagery.

The book heavily emphasizes philosophical themes throughout. Characters rationalize and grow their understanding of the world and their place in it with thoughts that can be relatable to readers / listeners with little effort. We all wish to understand our place in the world, and this book felt insightful to me despite addressing themes through the eyes of epic heroes.

The narration was fitting for the nature of the book. His voice was a bit slow and thoughtful in tone which melded well the philophical thoughts, discussions and analysis by the characters in the story. The style would not be as suitable for faster paced, more action filled stories, but it worked exceedingly well with this thoughtful and deliberate book.

Overall, I think the book was very good with excellent narration and is worth reading / listening to.
