Nice idea but 5 hours too long!

So I read the reviews and thought well nice idea lets try this one. Urgh - the writing is pedestrian to say the least and the 'story' such as it is drab. If our heroine says 'I must be crazy' - 'you must be crazy', 'they must be crazy' once more..............!!!!!!!! Okay so finding out your a witch on your mothers deathbed is a little odd but hey this is fantasy -you know the drill. To continue to believe that your mother called you a witch as an offensive term was a little stupid to say the least but finding out you are an actual witch doesn't make you 'crazy'. The introduction of serial killer plot was a little bizarre but if the heroine was a little more sympathetic it would have sat better.
Perhaps a better editor is needed, but the writing sure does need tightening up.
This is another narrator that believe women 'of a certain age' should have crackly, off key voices - never heard one myself but then what do I know - I'm only a woman 'of a certain age'.
I am sorry that I can find no plus sides to this book - frankly I don't care how it began and, with another 3 hours to go - I definitely don't care how it ends

Does the writer hate women?

The narrator did her best with a story based on a woman who is constantly judging herself and others, lying about everything and cannot even stand up for herself to the obnoxious cat. Felt absolutely no sympathy for her at all. Pushed through, hoping for a change that I felt sure would have to come, but no such luck. The other female characters were portrayed as obsessed with men and incapable of real supportive relationships.

What a shame.

This book could have been brilliant if only a little more thought had gone into it. She miraculously found two killers with little work and not much reason. The reader is left to fill in the rest I.e how she managed to convince the detective they were killers etc. Very vague.

I really enjoyed this story i found it funny and quirky. Jill is struggling as a PI when she finds out that she is a witch. Then suddenly her life starts to change with a family that want to get to know her, including the ghost of her mum and powers that are beginning to show. With a talking sarcastic one eyed cat and a serial killer on the loose its a funny read. I found this was a light read that was quite funny at times. It is not a very serious series but a nice easy read. Think I will continue in the series and see what happens next.

Absolutely awful

Very simple childish writing. Very slow. Over explanations and overly long descriptions. Have up after the second chapter.

Asshat?? Why did she say that so often??

The story wasn't bad but the narrators way of saying "Asshat" all the time really annoyed me.
If you can cope with that, you'll probably enjoy it 🙂

clunky clichéd & boring

The story had potential to be interesting but its made excruciating by outdated clichéd language and way too much detail on irrelevant scenes .The narration is stilted , without character or expression. nuanced narration could have saved it but instead it only highlights the clunky style of the writing . I couldn't finish it . too painful to listen to. Shame as the story could have been good.

Fun light-weight listen. Superb narration!!!

Fun! A nice break from more intense complex mysteries. Suitable for listening when car pooling with children as there aren't any sex scenes or foul language. The narrator is absolutely superb!!! Hannah Platts is as good as such great narrators; Katherine Kellgren, Simon Vance, George Guidall, etc. With over 600 audible books owned, I truly appreciate a good narrator. They can make or break a book for me. She made this book come to life. I'm hopeful that she is at the beginning of her career and will continue to narrate more books (currently, she had only a few).

Decent enough

A fun little romp. Light and clean. Tried to be a mystery and a paranormal, didn't do either especially well, but the pace and tone were fine, so was an enjoyable few hours.

Interesting

Interesting theme. A P.A. that knits and apparently that's her true calling, a talking one-eyed, cheeky cat and a P.I./newby witch who is the main character.
Add all these to the mix and stir well ... Now you have a sweet murder/mystery/witchy story. Quite entertaining.

Review are right this is a GREAT series!

This is a wonderfully entertaining story that is delightful to read. I enjoyed the first book so well that I download the complete series before I finished the finished the book. The books end with a cliffhanger, usually with a startling revelation or socially awkward situations.

The story is driven by Jill’s discovery that her biology family is witches. So, she has a learning curve and all the comedic situations that a beginner witch can encounter when learning magic in secret, being pursued by the diabolical nemeses of the story, and trying to work as a detective. After solving the mystery in the first book, demand for her services increases and her time becomes determined by others.

Jill has two separate lives, her paranormal life as a witch, which must be kept secret from non-paranormals. The story always has one central mystery, which Jill may or may not get paid for and other peripheral things that are happening to her inner circle. Her mysteries in her human world put her is a situation where she must work with Detective Maxwell. Their relationship begins as contentious. Winky, the one-eyed cat, is the most delightful character. While at the office there is dissension with the cat and her secretary Ms. V. The main mystery is in the human world. The little peripheral mysteries are solved with the aha epiphany. There is no profanity or sex to disrupt and a light, funny story.

Action between the magic and human world is tried together with Jill unintendedly using her magic in her human life. Yes, the conversation is snarky, and there are a few characters whose primary purpose is to whine. I read the complete series in three days and through enjoyed them.

Fun story paired with the perfect narrator

Where does Witch Is When It All Began rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a great little story that has a lot of promise, magic and discovery. It ranks at the top because I can't wait to listen to book 2, the narration is FAB (and totally fits the character, story, and is simply delightful to listen to).

Quit your bitchin'

Addendum:
The book is now finished.
I can't STAND the main character and the story is not worth the cost of putting up with her. She's a snarky little whiner. I finished this, but I'm asking for my money back. I will not continue the series.

A fun listen

A crazy one eyed cat...who talks!, a bran new witch just learning, a knitting nincompoop ( she drives me crazy) and a murder, no make that murders, makes this a fun book! I enjoyed listening to the reader, and although this is the start of a series Our detective got things done. I can see many things just bubbling on the edge awaiting development in the next book.

Slightly-annoying, light magic fun

The main character is VERY annoying, and since it's first person, that makes the book a little annoying too, but it was entertaining enough to have on while cleaning the house so, it serves it's purpose as a light magic novel.

Thrilled to have found this series!!!!

Would you listen to Witch Is When It All Began again? Why?

Loved the narrator so much!! And the writing is brilliant!

Have you listened to any of Hannah Platts’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Only saw one other book by this narrator which wasn't my style. It would be amazing if Hannah Platt narrated this entire series!!! I would buy each and every one!!!

Any additional comments?

MORE PLEASE!!!
