Summary

From the bestselling author of the Shardlake series, C. J. Sansom, comes Winter in Madrid, a standalone historical novel set in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War.

1940: The Spanish Civil War is over, and Madrid lies ruined, its people starving, while the Germans continue their relentless march through Europe. Britain now stands alone while General Franco considers whether to abandon neutrality and enter the war.

Into this uncertain world comes Harry Brett: a traumatized veteran of Dunkirk turned reluctant spy for the British Secret Service. Sent to gain the confidence of old school friend Sandy Forsyth, now a shady Madrid businessman, Harry finds himself involved in a dangerous game – and surrounded by memories.

Meanwhile Sandy's girlfriend, ex-Red Cross nurse Barbara Clare, is engaged on a secret mission of her own – to find her former lover Bernie Piper, a passionate Communist in the International Brigades, who vanished on the bloody battlefields of the Jarama.

In a vivid and haunting depiction of wartime Spain, Winter in Madrid by C.J. Sansom is an intimate and compelling tale which offers a remarkable sense of history unfolding, and the profound impact of impossible choices.

As gripping and absorbing as his Tudor novels

Great narration kept the pace going. Wanted to move onto the next Sansom set in 20th century. ..but looks like I shall have to wait. Very poignant at times, paints a vivid picture of Spain at the time. Characters you care about. plenty of baited breath moments.

Beautifully read but harrowing story

I found it very depressing but I couldn't stop listening because it was so well written. It was sometimes difficult to follow the time sequences but it was certainly gripping and well read as well as harrowing.

A truly fantastic book

I chose this book because it's set around a historical event I know very little about.
So glad I did, their are characters are well rounded and the story flows effortlessly.
It is a gritty hard hitting story, the action is realistic and never gratuitous.
The narration is very, very good.
thank you CJ Sansom for this amazing book.

Slow to start

A good book. I love C J Sansom’s writing and links with history. It was very slow to start. A lot of character building until about half way through the book. However the final chapters were excellent and great twists at the end.

I suspect that time will up the rating.

Firstly, I'd like to say I usually don't read anything like this. I was recommended this Author by a friend and it did everything to capture me at the beginning. Overall, I enjoyed the slow pace and the characters stayed true throughout. What I truly admired was the ending. So often, we see war and spy's through rose-tinted glasses and it really isn't. This ending shows that. Can anyone really win in war? When the rich wage war, it's the poor who die. But it is sad to have such a likable main character and to have him so defeated by the end... Ultimately a good book. Bit it's missing a few things that would make it great for me. Thank you Mr Sansom for helping educate me in what happened to the Spanish during the second world war.

C. J. Sansom doesn't disappoint!

I'm a fan of Sansoms' Shardlack books and radio4 adaptions. 'Winter in Madrid' is every bit as good. All the main characters are well described and the story is shoehorned into history brilliantly.
The narration is well paced and as equally brilliant as the tale. I shall search for more books read by Daniel Weyman in the future.

Wonderful story

Exciting and engaging story cleverly woven around historical facts. Superbly read and really involves the listener. It’s as if you are there, in the snow of Madrid

Enjoyable

It’s a good if run of the mill English reluctant hero spy story. First three quarters was good but the last quarter was predictable. Won’t be for everyone but give it a chance, it’s enjoyable.
