About this listen

Until Cassia Fallon inherits a fortune from her godmother, hers is a life half lived. Having graduated from one of England's finest medical schools, the nearest she has come to practicing medicine has been as an unpaid secretary to her doctor husband, Edward.

With her newfound wealth, she is finally free to do as she pleases and resumes her medical career with passion and determination. Edward can only look on resentfully as his wife's confidence grows and she begins to re-visit other, more dangerous, parts of her past. Cassia is questioning her marriage, her future, her everything...except where the money has really come from and why.

It soon becomes clear that her legacy may not be such a blessing after all, but rather a dark, corrupting force. The question, however, is not can Cassia resist it, but does she want to?

Critic reviews

"Penny Vincenzi dazzlingly combines the old-fashioned virtues of gripping storytelling with the up-to-the-minute contemporary feel for emotional depth and insight into the lives of the characters. She is a supreme stylist and clever writer. Reading her is an addictive experience." (Elizabeth Buchan)

Sorry it's abridged

This is a good read. unfortunately this Audible abridged version is difficult to follow and leaves out all the rich favour and detail of original book

Another great read from this author

Loved this book. The adventure, the journey of the woman’s life from repression to liberation. What a joy

Addictive

Penny Vincenzi never ceases to capture my imagination. The story of Cassia's inquisitive nature unravels stomach churning revelations, yet she ensures it was not in vain and endeavours to make amends. Compelling story and brilliantly narrated.

Abridged

Well read but so sad it was abridged. Missed out so much of what made this book one of my favourites.

Terrible

Not what I expect from a Penny Vincenzi novel. Story very flimsy. Would not recommend.
